 Absolute Must Have for HDTV December 29, 2008
First of all, if you have an HDTV (720p or 1080p, doesn't matter) and you do not have an upconverting DVD player and are still playing DVDs from a standard DVD player, stop reading this right now, and go get one. You can get a single disc one for under $50. Given the jump in picture quality, there is no sane reason not to do it.
Okay, now the actual review. I finally decided to pull the trigger this year and replace our 27 inch CRT TV with a flat screen LCD TV (37 LG30, if you care). Because our circa 2002 Sony DVD player topped out at 480p, I decided I should get an upconverting DVD player to take better advantage of the new HDTV. This has been an excellent decision. Superb performance.
In fact, I could sum up this review by saying I now have no plans to move up to Blu-Ray. The difference between what I have now with this DVD player and Blu-Ray would not be very significant. Add in the extra costs of Blu-Ray and still limited selection, including future online streaming, and it's an easy call. Frankly, I'm amazed they sell upconverting DVD players -- why would consumers buy into Blu-Ray when they could get 90-95% of the picture quality with an upconverting DVD player?
Just for fun, I hooked up both the old DVD and new DVD player and toggled back and forth between LOTR DVDs to compare. The upconverting player was by far superior on our new 37' HDTV. (I suppose the HDMI connection vs. component video makes a slight difference, too.)
I got the 5 disc because it is so much more convenient. I don't know why they are so rare -- totally worth the extra $40-50 for the convenience of loading several discs in at once and watching.
Finally, yes, loading time was a bit of an annoyance. It is a bit painful to trash my previous no-delay DVD player for one that takes longer, but the HD picture is worth it. I am told Blu-Rays take even longer to load, though, so score another point for upconverting over Blu-Ray.
Overall, five stars, possibly the best $109 I've spent this year.

I have recently purchased a Sony Bravia 40" LCD high definition 1080p TV for my bedroom from Amazon through a promotional pricing offer, intended to get me to sign up for an Amazon Credit Card. Nice deal. 1ooo bucks for the TV, 3 Interest Free months of low monthly payments. No problems there. So, I thought the next item I would purchase is the Sony 5-disk 1080p DVD player from Amazon. Read all the Amazon customer reviews, some positive, some not so positive. Price was pretty good, so I bought one. This Sony DVD player is supposed to be compatible with the Sony Bravia TV's. It is not. I made the simple connection via a HDMI cable from the TV to the DVD player, and according to the Instruction booklet, that should do it. I set the TV input to HDMI 1 input, which is the HDMI input I first tried (I eventually tried all three HDMI TV inputs individually). I get a signal to the TV, but Picture is very poor quality (unwatchable). I checked the TV Instructions booklet, and there are no additional steps to making this work. I previously had an LG HDMI upscaling DVD player that upscales standard DVD's to 1080i (1080i DVD player and 1080p TV), and the picture quality was fantastic. Not True HD, but damn close. Upscaling DVD players are a great choice for people who have a large collection of non-HD DVD's, and don't want to spend the money to replace their Library of DVD's to get high quality Picture from their collection. I know that this DVD player should work correctly, but for some reason, it will not sync with the same name brand TV. I will hafta contact the manufacturer, and see if there are additional steps I need to perform in getting these two items to correctly play my DVD's. Since I feel that this DVD player should work correctly out-of-the-box as the instructions indicate, I give this product a very low rating for not being easily compatible with their own brand TV.

I hesitated to purchase this product because of the reviews I read regarding how slowly it loads. I like Sony products, the price was right, so I purchased it. Although it is true that it loads slowly, it is not a problem for me. The sound quality and overall performance are excellent.

I'll get right to the point with no hi-tech mumbo-jumbo. This DVD player does exactly what I wanted it to. I like to play various TV show DVD's at different times, but found it a chore taking them in and out of boxes and into the DVD player...waiting for them to load etc...forgetting where I left off when I came back to them.
I plugged this DVD player into my TV in about 30 seconds, just like any other...loaded 5 different discs into the player, and voila!
You hit one button to take you to the next DVD on the tray, wait about 30 seconds for loading and there you have it.
It was worth the vaery reasonable price I paid.
