Same problem as noted by reviewer "Strange P" January 5, 2009 I had my Sony RDR-GX360 about four months, and it operated fine, recording directly from cable TV, or downloading stuff from the cable box DVR, then suddenly during Christmas, a strange high-frequency, and very annoying noise began coming from the audio outputs (both channels). After wiring, re-wiring, and debugging (finally taking the DVD recorder out of the loop completely), I became certain that the DVD recorder was indeed the source of the high-frequency noise. It is exactly as described by reviewer "Strange P" above. They said:
"Wait, what's that annoying freaking noise? It's a whirring sound coming through the audio inputs into the TV or stereo! There isn't even a DVD playing, just regular TV Open the door, sound goes away for a short time, then gets higher in pitch. Close the door...sound goes away for a minute and then comes back. It is worse when there is no DVD in the player and you're just trying to watch regular TV"
Every symptom and quirk he mentioned is exactly what suddenly happened to my unit; it just took 4 months to exhibit the flaw. There is definitely a serious problem with the design or component(s)/audio processor with this model. Not recommended, as it is a waste of money. I'm going for the Toshiba.
I would give this model a "zero" rating if the Amazon review system would allow it, but the system insists upon some rating; ignore the "1-star" as it is definitely a big ZERO!
POS-do not buy December 17, 2008 I picked this up for way too much money at a local store. I like the remote, I like the functionality, I like the editing features.

I took it back and decided to try a second unit, just in case. Same stupid mechanical noise coming through the line outs.
This thing is a certified POS and I'm glad I was able to return it before it drove me crazy. I thought my TV was going out. I'm probably going to buy the Toshiba for $99...
A Useless Waste of Money December 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We bought this sorry machine because we travel a lot. We record TV on a DVR, then move the programs to DVD to watch on the road. Unfortunately, this Sony machine has a built in copy guard function that finds macrovision where none exists. Programs will start to record, then quit between seven and 20 minutes later. We don't know we've wasted the time and a DVD until we come back at the end of the hour to finish it. In checking, we've found the stop point midway in commercials as well as midway in program materials. We never had this problem with the Panasonic DMR ES-25 that we previously wore out after thousands of hours of time shifting. A call to Sony brought the response (from some guy in another part of the world) that the recorder was working properly and that it means the programs are encoded. Nonsense! Sony, you have produced quality products in the past, many of which we use in our video production business. This isn't one of them. We'll think twice before purchasing any Sony DVD or Blu-ray recorder.

IT MUST BE A DESIGN FLAW AND YES......It is a LEMON!! November 21, 2008 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Also purchased in August 2008 via a different retailer, but the problem of FREEZING while watching a DVD must be a design FLAW since it did the same thing on my player. Unfortunately, I did not save my receipt and am stuck with this in-operable DVD player. Shame really, usually you can rely on "Sony" but not this time. Buyer Beware.
