Good For Speaking, Not For Singing January 9, 2009 This mic has outstanding quality for spoken word, but if you are a musician and are looking for a good mic to record with this is not the one for you. It distorts the voice and does not do well recording guitar either. If you're looking to record music as I am, I recommend you keep looking.
Great December 28, 2008 Very nice and easy to set up Mic. Especially nice with OS X. I use mine with an additional wind screen.
Latency December 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
So I've always wanted to record my music, say just vocals and acoustic guitar for example, and I wanted something that seemed simple to use/set up, inexpensive, and good quality. I looked that up and ended up finding this microphone -- "perfect for musicians, studio quality recording, etc." everything seemed perfect so I went and bought it. Now this would have been the perfect microphone, until I set it up and found an issue that would change everything...LATENCY!! This baby has a 1/2 to 1 second lag when I record, and looking up other forums this seems to be a problem with everyone else - it is the USB recording process in itself (converting analog signal to digital takes time to process = latency). There are ways to lower it, but after I tried everything I still had a fraction of a second, which is like a year when trying to overdub. Don't get me wrong it has excellent quality(like I said it *would* have been the perfect mic) but latency makes it IMPOSSIBLE to overdub/mix multiple tracks, which is almost a necessity for solo recording unless you can settle with single tracks. So if all you want to do is podcasts, internet talk, or otherwise single tracks, this would probably be for you. Another thing, the driver software they tell you to download is problematic; recording for over a minute or so at a time caused the sound to become erratic, every time. And this microphone DOES NOT WORK WITH VISTA.
PROS: Great quality, Plug and play is easy(in most cases), good for the price, comes with a free Sonar LE program, USB bus powered.
CONS: USB MICROPHONES HAVE LATENCY(lag!), driver software is problematic and should be avoided, does not work with vista.
Great Microphone December 21, 2008 I like this product and I would reccommend anyone to buy one.
Great quality micropnone
Great mic for the beginner! December 20, 2008 I've had the Samson CO1U microphone for aboug 6 months now, and I couldn't be more pleased with it. It is reliable, and the recording quality is excellent.
The monodirectional carotid diaphragm does a nice job of reducing external noises such as the fan of your computer, and the sound quality is quite crisp and clear. My only gripe is that as one increases the space from the sound source to the microphone, one begins to get increased background hiss. As such, someone who needs crystal clear sound will require a pop filter to avoid signal overload when explosive consonants are used (S, P, D, T, B).
If you can't afford a full studio setup with an amplifier, condenser mic, and specialized computer interfaces, this microphone is a great choice. Provided you use a pop filter, you won't be disappointed.
