The JobSite IR-FMR IR receiver picks up commands from an infrared remote control and routes them to a variety of A/V components, even if those components are located downstairs in a completely different room. As a result, it's possible to control your entertainment system from virtually anywhere in the home. It also lets you store components in a closet or other out-of-the-way location without sacrificing remote operation, making it an essential accessory for users with "hidden" A/V setups. And because the IR-FMR is "plasma-proof," you don't need to worry about interference from flat-panel displays, CFL lighting, indirect sunlight, and other infrared irritants. System integration requires a separately sold IR connecting block--which serves as the hub for the IR signals--and an IR emitter for each component. The IR-FMR itself should be located within your "control" room, i.e., wherever you sit when you want to operate the CD player, DVD player, etc. Once installed, users will enjoy a remote range of roughly 18 to 30 feet from the receiver and a receiving angle of around 20 to 30 degrees off-axis in either direction, more than enough for most applications. And depending on the specifications of your connecting block, you can also install additional IR receivers and control your system from multiple rooms. The latter option is great for music fans with complex multi-room speaker systems.
Installation is relatively straightforward (the receiver flush mounts into a 0.5-inch diameter hole), but does require such tools as a power drill, 1/8-inch slotted screwdriver, adjustable wrench or pliers, wire stripper, and wire labels. The IR-FMR also comes with 10 feet of connecting wire and both black and white bezels. Note that the unit requires wiring runs within the walls--Category 5 or better is recommended. The IR-FMR measures 0.75 by 0.25 by 2.62 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a two-year warranty on parts and labor.
