A perfect player, but a bit too late to the market. November 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Simply, the best audio/video player on the market. I had a Creative Zen device, an iPod, a Sansa, and finally settled on a Walkman. Audio quality is excellent; videos even on the small screen look sharp; navigation buttons and controls are intuitive and easy to use. Compared to all other players, the Sony gadget has incredible battery life. This is very important for me, because I use it non-stop for several hours a day( mostly for listening to lectures/podcasts and audiobooks). Another important advantage - the player doesn't lock you into a specific content management software, like iPod does. I've been able to hook it up to various computers and transfer files using MediaMonkey, Windows Media Player, WinAmp, iTunes, and whatever was available on my friends' computers. You can even use it without any special software! Just put your content into a folder, connect your Walkman to a USB port, and drag-and-drop your folder onto the device. This works especially well with podcasts and ad hoc music collections.
Too bad it took Sony several years to figure out design for a good media player. I am afraid the market has already settled on iPods and Sansas.
4 stars out 5 because the play-time counter doesn't go beyond 999 minutes.
Screen went Blank October 7, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have always liked all SONY products. This player was working well. I did enjoy the simplicity of transfering music and the way it was organized. I bough it in May but after 6 months the screen went blank. I see some vertical lines of green color, but most of it is black now. Don't know what happened. I had it in my pocket during a warm sunny day while walking. Don't think thats a reason for the screen to break down. I'll take it with SONY support and see if they can do something.
Amazon consistently states incorrect dimensions for this player October 6, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Why does Amazon list the wrong dimensions for this product in all of its listings?
This is clearly not a 1.3" x 5.8" x 6.6" player!
Potential customers should realize that it is instead 0.5" x 1.7" x 3.1".
Big difference!
Great sound, graphics and controls. August 28, 2008 The NWZ-A818 is a wonderful little mp3 player that is fun to listen to, look at and easy to control. Plays a number of music formats. The graphics are crystal clear. It looks cool and attracts attention, but can also be comfortably holstered to an arm and out of the way if you're working out. If you love your music, this device won't disappoint, with great earbuds right out of the box.
I didn't expect it to have an FM radio, which it doesn't have, but that would have made this mp3 player even better. Just another bell or whistle to add to the already packed set of options in this device.
Fantastic Player (After You Format It) July 4, 2008 I've had this player for a couple of months now, and me and this player didn't get along until recently. First all of the good stuff: The battery life is incredible, the sound is the best I've heard from any MP3 player, it feels very sturdy, and the screen is easy to look at.
However, almost all of that was overwhelmed by the interface between the player and the computer sucking so bad. You use windows explorer and media player to load and delete songs off of the player. And this never worked right. It took at LEAST a whole minute to delete a single song. That doesn't sound like much, but when you want to delete some stuff off so you can put other music on, sitting there for 60 seconds per song is a major pain. And the sync feature with window's media player wouldn't update songs. For instance, if I loaded a song onto the player and I didn't realize I put a typo in the title, the only way I could update the file was to delete it off the player (which took ages), and then reload it (which took an equally long time). Deleting and then loading an entire album could take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. Total pain.
So I got fed up, and decided to format the player. Just delete everything.
Now, it works like a charm! Deleting is fast, loading is fast, the sync feature works, it's absolutely fantastic. So now it sounds great, is well built, and all of that...and the software works! Hooray!
