Amazon.com Product Description
With Initial's slender, compact DVD-5820 portable DVD player you can watch your DVD movies, listen to your favorite MP3 CDs, and even watch slideshows of your digital photography--all while you're in your home or out and about. The DVD-5820 features an 5.8-inch widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) thin-film-resistor LCD, and compatibility with JPEG and Kodak Picture CDs, as well as HDCD-encoded CDs. Commercial CDs encoded with High-Definition Compatible Digital technology number in the thousands and play on any CD or DVD player, but players with HDCD decoding chips derive an extra measure of low-level resolution from these discs.

The player also offers built-in stereo speakers for headphones-free listening. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output (through a .125-inch minijack-to-RCA coaxial digital-audio cable, not supplied) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The player is firmware upgradeable to accommodate future formats, and it comes with built-in anti-shock technology to help maintain smooth playback when you're on the go.

A composite-video output simplifies hookup with most TVs. Playback options include frame-by -frame slow motion, 2x and 4x zoom, screen saver/power-saving function, CD programming, parental locking, and multiple-angle viewing (with applicable discs). Supplied accessories include an AC adapter, rechargeable battery, user's manual, and a remote control. Headphones are not included.

5 out of 5 stars Initial 5820   April 9, 2007
My wife bought the Initial 5820 for me as a Christmas present three years ago. With heavy use it still is performing like new.
We use it in the car on trips and I use it in my office.
The picture from the 5.8" monitor is clear and the color is fantastic. The sound quality is good however excellent when plugged into our cars MP3 player jack.
Recently I have considered a larger screen model and will return to Initial as a loyal customer.

4 out of 5 stars Great Unit, poor sound   March 3, 2006

I'm really enjoying this unit. The only drawback is the sound from the built-in speakers is so poor I can only bear to listen to it using headphones. This isn't a problem since I have only watched DVD's on it by myself so far, but I'd have to get a 2nd pair of headphones and a splitter if I wanted to watch DVD's with someone else. I don't fully understand the purpose of a remote with a unit that has a screen so small that you have to be in arm's reach of it anyway. That is not a complaint, I'm just puzzled. Overall , the unit seems to be of good quality and I'd recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Great Price/Value - Short Lifespan   September 3, 2005

I picked up the 5820 primarily becuase of the price - and I needed a portable for a cross-country flight with two kids. The playback quality and sound was what I expected for the price - not earth-shattering, but fine for movies on flights. I also have used it on some long drives, and it worked fine there as well.

A scant 8 months later, however, the dvd's started skipping, and sporadically just stopping with an image of Harry Potter hanging there in mid-flight on his broom. I thought it was a scratched DVD or something, so I popped another DVD in and it played fine until about 1/2 through the movie. I was then greeted by a loud whine that is apparently the DVD motor in its death throws. Movies seem to play until the movie gets to about 1/2 way, then the loud noise returned and the movie stopped.

With some prior reviews about poor customer service, and the fact that I can pick up another portable DVD player (NOT an Initial) for a little over $100, I'll be simply trashing the old one and getting a new one. I never thought of portable DVD players as disposable, but that's what this Initial has turned out to be - use it till it breaks and get a new one...

2 out of 5 stars Good product - poor customer service   July 29, 2004

I've owned this unit for about 2 years. The only problem I've had is the power receptacle came loose. I work on mechanical and electrical devices quite often, so I found it easy to disassemble and repair that. I eventually purchased a DVD recorder to make back up copies for movies I wanted to take on trips and for my home movies. The unit was not able to play any of the DVD-R or DVD+R formats I tried. I called the customer service people at Initial asking if there was a firmware upgrade I could acquire that would make the unit compatible. (Firmware is the operating system and is actually software that is written to a memory chip on the player). The person at Initial was polite, but decidedly very unhelpful in a smug way (smarmy). He told me the unit is no longer manufactured and that they do not have the firmware. Thinking I might also have a corrupt firmware, I asked if I could get just the original firmware; either just the firmware or send the unit to them to have them install it. He told me THEY DON'T EVEN KEEP THE ORIGINAL firmware. I had to laugh. I know it's a little piece of code that will fit onto a floppy disk. If the R&D people don't keep that, they don't have anything with which to use as a base for the next version of players or to fall back on if the next version fails. Not only that, but to those wanting to purchase one, this means INITIAL CANNOT FIX THE UNIT IF IT BREAKS. I asked him "So, in reality, you guys don't want to help me, right?". The lack of a reply was enough for me. Other than that, I've put the unit through a lot of abuse and it is still going strong!

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding value for the money   May 8, 2004

We took a chance and bought this product late 2001. We never heard of the company but decided to take a chance. For over a year this DVD player was used EVERY day for at least 12 hours. It has been used on several trips running for over 10 hours non-stop each way as well as visits to clinics, hospital stays, and family visits.

The only problem that I had with the player was that the pole for the power jack (AC/DC) gets loose after a while. Just a minor design flaw (lack of better support for the pole) that really is a matter of the USER taking care when moving the unit when the AC adapter is plugged in. I managed to fix this short myself by taking the unit apart and heating up the solder area under the pole with a soldering iron.

So, I am surprised to see so many negatives for the Initial products overall. When we bought the unit AudioVox, SONY, Panasonic, RCA, and others were at least 50% higher in cost. The DVD player is STILL going strong. The hinge for the LCD screen is still working very well. I highly recommend this product for overall quality, reliability, and durability. Only reason it did not get 5 stars is because of the minor design flaw mentioned above. I found the same type of power jack on other brands so I would not be surprised if they also have this problem. My two year old and his little sister was the main audience for this unit the first two years. We managed the use of it for them most of the time but kids are curious and we often found our son trying to learn how to use it. He learned how to use it and you know that kids his age are not gentle so I have to emphasize the unit's durability.

Picture quality and sound are VERY good. After all, this is a portable DVD player - not a full size progressive scan player that is connected to a $500+ AV receiver and an HDTV capable monitor. By the way, I have connected it to a TV and home theatre system several times, great picture and sound - amazed family and friends.

DVDs that would not play in a non-portable player worked fine in this one. I do hope that this helps - I did four months of research before buying the product. I am going to buy the 7" unit so the adults can watch a movie while away from home as well.
