friend likes it a lot...

3 out of 5 stars great picture, poor performance   August 23, 2007
I have owned 4 portable dvd players, and this was the second one I owned. I ended up giving it away because I was so frustrated at its inability to play DVD's. It was hit or miss. Sometimes it played, but mostly it just spun and spun and spun.

But what I really miss about it, now that I have owned two replacements, is that of all the portable DVD players I've owned, this one had by far the best picture quality. I really miss that. I miss it enough to be willing to buy another one and risk its poor performance again. I also liked the super long battery life and light weight. The Sony FX810 I'm currently using advertises longer battery life, (but it's only 3 hours compared to Samsung's 4+ hours), has poorer resolution, and is much heavier. I use it with headphones, so I have no opinion on sound quality.

Samsung, if you're reading this, please improve the quality of your product to read DVD's better, but keep the great picture and battery, (plus improve the sound), and you will have the best product out there.

1 out of 5 stars Portable unless you move it, #2   March 21, 2007

I bought the Samsung L70 player from Fry's, I think it was about $180, much pricier than other 7" players at the time. But... the clerk talked us into it, claiming that the resolution was better than others. I now have a feeling that he just wanted a higher commission.

It worked a few times, then kept resetting when moved. I agree with the other review titled "Portable unless you move it" -- essentially that's the truth. By the time I went back to Fry's it was outside of the exchange period; I called Samsung, but neglected to ship it back before the warranty expired. Did I already mention that the player was gently used a few times (maybe 4?).

I guess I should have learned my lesson the previous year, when a Samsung 8mm video camera broke after three months. No more Samsung products for my family.

2 out of 5 stars Increasingly frustrating   August 29, 2006

This is our second portable DVD player. We purchased a "cheap" one first and had problems you'd expect from a cheap one so we then exchanged it for this model on the salesperson's suggestion.

At first all seemed great, but as we used it for the second and third times, issues others have mentioned - the audio is very poor and if it even gets slightly jarred the playback stops - started manifesting themselves.

Not only that, but the laser is so sensitive that if there is even the smallest scratch on the disc, the whole thing locks up and you have to power down and try to find your scene again.

We bought this machine to enterain my son on car trips and it has completely and utterly failed us in this objective. If we can't play any of his DVDs because even if the DVD is completely free of even the tiniest scratch, and we were able to have a completely smooth car ride, and even then, if it can't then be heard, what's the use of it? It's an expensive door stop.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasently surprised   August 11, 2006

I've had this player for over a year now and it's still operating great, especially for the amount of used and traveling it does.
I have found it convienent enough to slide into the back of my purse and bring to resturants or doctor's appointments for my 2 year old to entertain herself with. For that alone it's been invaluable.
She has also thrown it on the floor a few times with a hard enough impact to knock the battery right off. But surprisingly, it still works fine.
We use it almost daily and I have not noticed any problems with duribility (hinges, buttons ect).
The only reason why I did not give it five stars is because it is very frustrating in the car because it stop playing for the most random movements. I wish I had spent the extra $100 for the non-skip version, but at the time, this seemed expensive enough.
The battery lasts a long time, probably 4 hours. It outlasts my laptop! It also plays a couple of DVDs that my laptop will not, go figure.
I am glad I bought it.

Update: I have now owned it for almost 2 years now. I have a feeling that it might crap out soon. It gives me error messages every now and then and sometimes simply refuses a disc. It's had a great run though! Especially since we use it for our toddler at every meal and in addition to that we use it for car ride, resturants, etc. It has had A LOT of use.

I think this time around I'm going to get one with a smaller screen just to make it more portable and I will definitly get one with anti-skip! No doubt about that!
