Great To Store All Your Multi-Media Needs But Item Unsteady November 10, 2008 This unit does a superb job at storing literally hundreds or thousands of multi media items such as dvds, cds and tapes...I was in a dilemma in that I had literally hundreds of dvds that needed to be stored with a limited amount of space to store it all..This unit is perfect for this type of job..Takes up very little room since the width of the unit is so small but at the same time since it's height is so huge it contains many shelves with which to store your items. My only complaint is that unit is quite unsteady and it doesn't take much to tip it over and also the bars on the bottoms of the shelves could be more spread apart to prevent items from falling through. Overall, a great product and it serves a definite purpose!
Flexible and sturdy October 8, 2008 I ended up buying three sets of these shelves - one at a time. For the money they are an excellent value. They are quite sturdy, assembly is straightforward, and shelves can be adjusted in approximately 1-inch increments. When assembling this unit, it is important to ensure the first couple of shelves are true so the unit stands correctly, but that is not hard to accomplish.
Even though the adjustable "bookend" brackets look flimsy, they work very well and are quite secure. For a rack this tall, it is very important to use the anti-tipping strap -- especially if you have little children living with you or visiting.
Minor flaws: a) The tapered plastic wedges used to hold the shelves in place do not fit the sleeves as well as they should so the joints are not as neat as I would like. (I also own the Atlantic 8-Shelf Steel Multimedia Storage Rack (Black) and that fit is almost perfect.) b) Each shelf uses only two wires to support CDs/DVDs -- so items placed on the shelves easily drop down to a tilted cocked position that is difficult to correct if the shelves are closely positioned for maximal storage (the shelves on my 8-shelf rack use five wires to support CDs/DVDs and are much better in this regard) and c) The anti-tipping anchor strap kit does not supply a flat washer to keep the strap from working over the screw head.
Others have reported bent shelving. My units were ordered one by one over the space of about nine months and I did not experience any issues with bent shelves. If I get to the point where I need more shelf space, I would happily buy yet another unit.
Assembly tips: a) Carefully slide each shelf into place over the plastic wedges, then gently tap it tight using the rubber-coated handle of a hammer to snug each corner while applying some downward pressure using your other hand. Also use gentle upward pressure and the hammer handle to tap shelves loose if you need to reposition them. b) Do not screw the top sections of the vertical posts into place until the bottom shelves have been installed. c) Once assembled, lift the unit using the vertical posts. If you attempt to lift the unit by one of the shelves, the shelf very likely will come loose (experience speaking here *smirk*). d) The wedges do not fully encircle the vertical rods. Since the sleeves do not completely cover the wedges, arranging the gap in each wedge so it is positioned at the inside diagonal of the corner ensures the neatest and most uniform look.
last rack you'll need June 19, 2008 i never thought i would find a rack that holds all my DVD's and video games, but this one does, and I have 2 shelves still empty. You can adjust almost everything on this for CD's, games, dvd, etc... I would highly recommend this to anyone who has a huge media collection they need to store in one rack
holds a ton of dvds! June 16, 2008 great shelf. held every single one of my husband's dvds, which is about 430, plus a bunch of boxed sets that fit on the shelves too. the adjusting was easy and the shelf is very sturdy. this can hold 500 standard dvd boxes. i would definitely recommend this shelf is you dont want to waste a bunch of room storing 500 dvds. this is tall and narrow and is more inconspicious than a bookshelf.
Not so sturdy . . . February 8, 2008 Own two of the smaller models of the Atlantic cd/dvd shelving. My cd collections outgrew them, however, so I had to expand. This enormous model is plenty big, but it definitely has some shortcomings. For one thing, there is no way to put all of the shelves on the unit if you want them to be equally spaced out, so I ended up keeping a shelf off. Further, the shelves are not nearly as sturdy as they are on the smaller models. The reinforcing metal around the edges is entirely gone, and their is one less runner (from 3 bars to 2) so sometimes when you are putting cds/dvds on the shelf, they will tip into the gap between the runners. Finally, for reasons I can't really understand other than what I have already explained, the unit is much more wobbly as a whole than the smaller units (which were very sturdy). I sways considerably at the slightest touch, and as is the case with all of these, assembly is kind of a pain. All of that being said, it hasn't tipped over and it holds all of my cds.
