Panasonic's progressive-scanning DVD-LX9 offers the versatility of a portable DVD player alongside the performance of a sophisticated home-theater component--and you can use it as both. The player handles DVD-Video, high-resolution DVD-Audio, DVD-R, and DVD-RAM playback--as well as standard and recordable CDs, including MP3- and WMA-encoded discs. Its slender chassis holds a massive, 9-inch widescreen (16:9) LCD screen and a built-in rechargeable battery (good for about 2.5 hours between charges). Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVD-LX9 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture. The included docking cradle offers switchable Designed to take full advantage of both audio and traditional video DVD formats, the DVD-LX9 delivers the immersive six-channel surround sound of the DVD-Audio music format. DVD-Audio offers super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound, in both multichannel and stereo. The DVD-LX9 performs its own decoding of DVD-Audio signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate this feature. Audio features include DTS and Dolby Digital decoding with 5.1-channel analog- and digital-audio outputs, included stereo speakers, and Dialogue Enhancer for DVD movie viewing. Advanced Surround Sound (VSS) simulates surround effects from any two speakers or from headphones. This player is HighMAT compatible. High-Performance Media Access Technology is a standard co-developed by Panasonic and Microsoft to improve interoperability for digital media programming between PCs and electronics devices. HighMAT provides an efficient method for arranging digital photo, music, and video collections on recordable media.

This will not be a techinical review, instead, I want to say that compared to the other two (yes two!) portable dvd players that I've purchased in the last two years for my son, this Panasonic is heads above the rest in quality!
So my review is about the longevity of this product, compared to the junk out there now that you buy and a month later, it will no longer work. My player is now over 3yrs old, and running like the first day I bought it.
The one thing I wish that companies would work on, is making the "eye" that reads disks be retractable somehow so little fingers do not touch it as the disks are being changed.

Awesome unit! I just purchased the Panasonic DVD-LX9 for myself for use while traveling (if you purchase one before March 26 of 2005, Panasonic has a rebate form at their website for a free carrying case and car/airplane adapter)....It is a great unit! I work in the television industry, and I like to have video that looks gooood! This unit does not disappoint!! The picture is incredible, and the colors are brilliant. With 3 weeks of ownership under my belt, the only complaint I have is that the battery supplied with the unit only holds a 2 - 2.5 hour charge. A bit frustrating when using it this past weekend to help keep our 16 month old occupied (with Baby Einstein DVDs) during a 9 hour car ride. A quick stop to my favorite chain electronics store, and $13 later I had a cigarette lighter power adapter, and we were good to go! The docking station that comes with the unit is nice but not really a necessitity...I have no complaints with that either, I didn't really even need it, but I was able to get the model with the docking station for less than the DVD-LX8. I'd give the unit 4.5 stars, but that isn't an otion.

I wanted to buy my wife a portable DVD player and reviewed several models to include "hands-on" demos and the quality of the Panasonic easily beats them all. The number one feature to consider, of course, is picture quality and the LA-9 mimics a HD picture --truly amazing for such a small unit. The LA-9 is pricy but well worth the cost. We often take plane trips lasting 3-5 hours so it got even pricier as we also bought the optional battery pack for longer play and sound cancelling earphones. The cradle is a big plus as we use it to play DVDs through our kitchen TV. All in all, a VERY flexible unit with features galore for either travel or at-home use. If you can afford it, this is the one to get.

Had this unit for two weeks and it is great. It plays all types of media list in description on panasonic.com PLUS DVD-RW. I have a sony recorder RDR-GX7 (great recorder), and it records dvd-rw. The LX9 Plays it without problems even though the manuel says it does not it does.
picture quality is great and many menu features which help tweek picture. I have not used it on battery long enough to determine how long it last but it comes with a cord so use it instead.
music cd's work great, cdr and cdrw with mp3s only. It does not take long to load up as some reviews added.
overall another qualitly product from panasonic. I highly recommond.
I used the external speakers and must admit they are pretty good. a little flimsly but sound wise pretty good.
the internal speakers are loud enough however.
if you want a unit that plays mostly any disk out there, you cant go wrong with the panasonic LX-9
