I love the sound of these headphones. I listen to various types of music - these headphones are clear, the low end is distinct and not boomy - the bass sounds 'blossom' forth in a space all their own without muddying up anything else.
Of course these are not headphones to block out the rest of the world - the design is open and you will hear extraneous sounds. That is the nature of the design.
For quality listening in a quiet environment, I'm not sure how much 'goodness' one could really gain by spending more money.
They are plenty loud on a iPOD without an amplifier - however I use them with a small headphone amp and they sound fantastic. As others have said, the adapter will place a strain on your headphone jack, so pick up one of the suggested extension cables so you don't have to plug the big adapter into your headphone jack.

I actually have the HD580 headphone. But about a year and a half after ordering them from Amazon, the plastic headband part (that holds the thing together) broke. Mind you, I baby my headphones so it wasn't a result of abuse or anything like that. I realized these puppies had a 2 year warranty, so I shipped them back to S and after a week and a half, I had a good to go set waiting on my doorstep. So not only do they sound great, but you can bet you'll get top notch warranty service.

I've had these headphones for over a year now and still adore them. I did quite a bit of research on this range of headphones and am still satisfied.
My only slight negative is the cord "could" present a problem if you were to stress it since it does not plug in to the actual headset. The cord is long and you have to be mindful of where it is if you use it at a desk with a wheeled chair.
Extremely comfortable for the size. The sound is amazing to me.

Though I appreciate quality sound and a nice product, I don't think I can rightly consider myself an "audiophile." In fact, I feel like the term is a little bogus for the majority of the population who, in reality, probably can tell little difference between something mid grade and something a few steps higher. Then again, I'm no expert on the subject so I may be wrong.
What I can say though is that from the perspective of this average listener with a bit of experience with headphones (I've owned probably 7 pairs of ranging qualities), these Sennheiser HD-595s are very nice. I find the sound to be extremely well articulated, and there is no "boxy" feel that I got with my last pair of (closed) phones. I am actually quite surprised by how light they feel on my head considering the quality of the sound that reaches my ears. Though I have owned a number of different kinds of headphones as I mentioned above, I am still hearing new things in my music that I've never noticed before. I'm impressed.
Comparing this quality with the price makes these phones an easy choice as well. The next step up, the HD600s, are widely acclaimed but will require an amp to be properly run. The 595's run quite nicely without an amp and, from the perspective of this average listener, sound as good as I could ever need. I'm very glad I bought them.

I've been looking everywhere for sound like this.
I went out on a limb and purchased them without having listened to them before but only because no one around me sold them.
I must say it was the greatest decision ever.
Gives true sound, front row-like reproduction, amazing.
These are audiophile headphones, so they're not going to produce banging bass naturally, unless you pair then with an amplifier. With an amp, you can make them sound pretty much however you want. And of course, they will still sound great.
You can hear everything. I mean everything. People in the background (like a jazz performance), deep breaths being taken by the singer, and absolutely nothing is muffled or overpowered.
There is no comparing the sound of these Sennheiser headphones. And especially at the price here at amazon.
I almost forgot that they are also extremely comfortable. Sennheiser, along with their sound, is always praised for their comfort. The earcups are encompassed with a screen like plastic cover and a chrome trim on the outside. The inside is lined with microfiber fleece which is very soft and comfortable and it also allows listening with glasses. The band of the headphones, which rests on the top of your head, is lined with a thick but soft leather pad. You will forget that you are wearing these headphones easily. They will not hurt after long periods of listening sessions, and they will not become hot and steamy inside the earcups because they have an open-ear design, which also means that whatever you are listening to will be easily heard by people around you. When you are blasting music through these cans, they could easily be mistaken as speakers in a headphone shape. Therefore, these are not at all for public use and i wouldn't recommend using them in a car unless you are alone.
Warning: The 1/4 to 1/8 mini plug adapter does cause strain on the connection between the adapters. With that being said, you might want to purchase another adapter, or just use an 1/8 mini plug extension cord so that the connection between the included adapter can lay on the floor or some flat surface.
Note: the strain is not at all tremendous but you want to avoid strange events if you can, although these headphones do have a 2 year warranty.
Use with the iPod: pretty good. Some people say not to use them with an iPod, but you will be fine. Especially with the newer iPods because their backs are curved which allows easy insertion of the plug.
Included: a little clip thing that can be placed on the edge of a shelf or a table and then you hang the headhones on it. Looks quite elegant actually. Even the clip is encompassed in leather for a "prestige" appearance.
The adapter.
And the box also can act as a storage container because it can be locked by means of sliding cardboard hooks.
Recommendations: As with all great cans, you do need to "break-in" these headphones. I recommend 30-60 hours. You will notice a tremendous difference from listening to it right out of the box. The drivers will become more fluid in their movement, and the response will be spectacular.
Also these headphones sound great by themselves, seriously. But...a speaker amplifier/headphone amp makes these bad boys shine.
Even a sound card on a comp. sounds great with these.
Please buy these headphones if you always seem to be unsatisfied with every headphone you try on. I cannot stress how great these are especially for the price. (Let's thank amazon for that. When I bought these Digital Media Source had the cheapest price for new).
