Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The DVD-LS50 features a 7-inch (diagonal screen measurement) LCD 16: 9 screen, built-in stereo speakers, the Mono Arm design and dual headphone jacks. The battery life of the DVD-LS50 is 2.9 hours at the minimum LCD brightness. The Panasonic portable DVD player includes high-speed, 5-step Smooth Motion Scan, a feature that provides crystal-clear forward and reverse scan, in 5 speeds. At the highest setting, the unit scans at an incredible 100 times normal speed. Panasonic portable DVD player optimizes the viewing experience by adding two key features - Dialog Enhancer and Cinema Mode. Dialog Enhancer boosts the center channel volume - where most of the principal dialog emanates when playing a Dolby Digital 5.1 disc - by 6dB. Cinema Mode improves the picture quality by reducing glare, softening resolution and improving visibility of details in dark scenes - resulting in a more realistic, cinema-like image.

Amazon.com Product Description
Enjoy your favorite movies wherever you roam with Panasonic's portable DVD-LS50 multiformat DVD player. Featuring a 7-inch screen, the 16:9 aspect ratio DVD-LS50 enables you to watch movies in widescreen format or conventional 4:3 formats such as letterbox and pan-and-scan. The LCD can be manually adjusted to a variety of different angles that can accommodate a wide range of viewing positions. The DVD-LS50 also features built-in stereo speakers, a rechargeable battery with a battery life of up to 3 hours, audio output for Dolby Digital and DTS, and a remote control.

In addition to DVD video discs, the DVD-LS50 is compatible with DVD-Audio, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, video and audio CDs, MP3, WMA, and CD-R/-RW discs. It also supports HighMAT (High-Performance Media Access Technology), a technology codeveloped by Panasonic and Microsoft that improves the method of storing, arranging, and playing back digital photo, music, and video collections on recordable discs, such as DVD and CD recordable media.

With the high-speed, 5-step Smooth Motion Scan feature, you'll get crystal-clear forward and reverse scan at 100 times normal speed at its highest setting. The Cinema Mode function lessens glare, providing colors that are more cinemalike, and picture resolution that is gentler to the eyes. It also improves the visibility of details in dark scenes by automatically adjusting picture contrast, and helps to suppress color smearing as well. The Dialogue Enhancer feature increases the center-channel volume relative to other channels, making movie dialogue easier to hear and understand.

The DVD-LS50 has 1 composite A/V out and a 3.5 mm headphone minijack. It offers advanced virtual surround sound, headphone surround sound, and optical digital audio output for Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound--making this road warrior a complete solution for your home theater as well.

Tech Talk
Dolby Digital: Digital audio compression technology developed by Dolby Laboratories that provides the same 5.1 discrete channels of high-quality digital audio found in Dolby Digital cinema audio systems. Because all of the channel data are recorded discretely, Dolby Digital offers good channel separation and little sound deterioration due to the digital channel data processing. It conforms to 5.1-channel surround sound. The rear channel is stereo, and there is a discrete subwoofer channel.

DTS: Digital audio compression technology developed by Digital Theater Systems that conforms to 5.1-channel surround sound. The rear channel is stereo, and there is a discrete subwoofer channel.

What's in the Box
Panasonic DVD-LS50 portable DVD player, remote control, batteries for remote control, rechargeable battery, and AC adapter.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible - DO NOT BUY THESE   September 19, 2007
I purchased two of the LS50s for my two kids. Guess what, BOTH of them have died with H03 or sometimes H02 errors. The "fixes" posted here worked for a short time, then both machines died again with the same errors. Both of my kids are very careful with their electronics and are responsible kids. They have never had any other problems with other products. Panasonic will NEVER get business from me again. $700+ WASTED.

4 out of 5 stars H03 Error--fixed!!   September 7, 2007
I bought the Panasonic DVD-LS55 (same as LS50 except it has an extended battery) in July 2004 and had been very happy with it up until July 2007, when I got the dreaded H03 Error while trying to play a movie for my 2 and 4 year olds on a delayed and then cancelled flight. I finally got around to calling a repair shop today to find out that it would take approx. 1 week and an average of $125 to fix it. Instead of spending the money, I opted to search online for suggestions on how to fix it myself.

I found H03 Warrior's posting and tried all that he suggested. I held the back skip, pause, and play buttons simultaneously...nothing. I opened up the unit and tried blowing on stuff and tested it...nothing. I removed a ribbon, tried to see if anything was lodged inside and replaced it...nothing. Finally, I manually moved the laser from left (all the way) until right (all the way), placed it back in and tested it...it worked!!!

Therefore, don't be so quick to throw out the DVD player or to send it to the repair shop. I will now include a tiny philips screwdriver in my DVD travel case in the event the dreaded H03 rears its head again. THANKS A TON H03 WARRIOR!!!

1 out of 5 stars HO3 Error again on 2 players   March 7, 2007
We had gotten this item as a gift well it stopped working after less than a year and My mother sent us the same one again we used it once same thing happened H03 error code on both. Obviously there is a major problem if you read all the reviews alot of people have the same problem. We used the advise on here to fix it or the other alternitive was to take it in and pay $59 to have it looked, I think not on two you can buy a whole new system for that. We took the back of you unit off like previously stated in other people comments and moved the optic lens toward the center we just guessed and both units work now. Of course Panasonic won't tell you this because they can't make money off of fixing it. I would like to say i am not impressed with Panasonic they should of recalled this!!!

3 out of 5 stars Mixed review   January 2, 2007

Had I written my review in the first year I owned my DVD player, I would have easily given it a five star rating; Excellent sound and picture and a decent battery life, interface and design. But after the dreaded "code: HO3 " error appeared while on a 5 hour cross country flight, and after reading others comments about Panasonic's utter lack of shame or assistance of any kind, I think a 3 star rating is generous.

Like others I had to crack open the player and essentially "reset" the optic eye to the center by turning the screw drive by hand. It immediately solved the problem (thanks a million to whoever offered this tip). What bothers me is that Panasonic must be aware of the problem and the simple fix that is necessary. Someone at Pana probably did a cost benefit analysis and decided a recall would be too expensive, and a lawyer of theirs probably said admitting there is a problem and explaining the simple fix to customers would lead to greater liability. Shame on Panasonic.

Buyer beware indeed
