5 out of 5 stars Good with Linux   November 13, 2006
I have had this player for almost a year now working with openSuse Linux and I am very happy. I used libiRiver with Konqueror suport in the beginning, but I am much happier since I updated the firmware to version 1.28 with UMS support, which makes it a simple USB memory stick.
Two small hints I want to point out:
- OGG support is great, but bit rate is only supported to a maximum of 225 kbps.
- If you need to format your player (my file system got messed up once and sound files were mixed and intertwined), you need to format the entire device, not a partition (as it is usually done in Linux with parted or with Yast2). Here is how to reformat the entire disk/player (change to root (su) first):
-- run "mount" and see which device name is being used to mount the iRiver.
-- run "umount /dev/..." using the device name found above.
-- run "mkfs -V -t vfat -c -I /dev/..." using the same device name.
-- unplug and turn it off and on.

5 out of 5 stars It's Amazing!   September 12, 2006
While researching for a way to put my old vinyl albums on cd, I thought my only option was to invest in a usb turntable (although I already owned a turntable), since I didnt want to hassle with connecting my stereo to my pc. Then I found this Iriver iFP-895 digital audio player. I snatched it up immediately as the model has been upgraded and is no longer being manufactured. It solved all my problems. Complete with usb cables,line-in cables, headphones, installation cd, battery and case accessories,it comes with everything you need to start recording right away. This litle machine has so many features its hard to know where to start describing them all.

First, it uses one AA battery so no wasting time recharging and hunting for that plug box. Just pop in a new battery. I pulled an all nighter recording albums,I was so happy to be able to digitize my music, and the battery lasted through the night and the next day and is still half full (theres an indicator on the LCD screen)

Second, I found that my old cassette player has a mic plug in and I was able to use the line in cable to record my old cassettes also! You can record any external source using this.

Third, it is completely customizable! If there is a setting you don't like, you can change it! Like the lenght of time the backlight is lit and the equalizer controls and the fade-in control to prevent sudden loudness from one song to the next, the adjustment for the lenght of space between songs and so many other custom controls it's amazing how many features you can personalize, even putting in text and song info. It has a sleep timer to shut off if you lull yourself to sleep with music, an alarm and a programmed timer to record your favorite radio programs just like a vcr with your TV. How amazing is That!

Fourth, The sound quality is superb. Some of my cassetes were homemade second generation and the recordings sound better than the originals I made. The albums sound great too and I left in some of that needle humming noise (its removable) so it sounds like I am listening to a great sounding turntable which I like. I have a fantastic set of Alltec Lansing multimedia speakers hooked to my PC so when I play music at my desk its like having my stereo in my home office. There is a 5 band equalizer and 4 EQ settings, all adjustable to your personal preference.

Fifth, Unlike the popular iPod version of this player I can also record my class lectures. I sat in the back of my class and turned this on and the recording was as if I was right there in front. There is a control you can set for far away recording (AGC) making it possible to record in large settings.

Six, the software is a great organization system to store files on your PC complete with a conversion wizard to convert to MP3 WMA,OGC and ASF formats, it also supports 40 languages, and has easy upgrades to lastest versions of software on the manager screen. Drop and drag files lets you upload music to PC and create playlists to burn to cd. It is supported by many online music stores thou I havent tried this yet as I have my own store(collection) which had been collecting dust all these years.

I cant say enough about this player except that I dropped it twice on a hardwood floor and it didnt skip a beat and works just fine. I don't know how they could improve on this player but the newer models may just be prettier and yet they don't record or use a single replaceable battery, although they have more storage space (this one is 512 but its enough for my purposes and I can delete files easily right on the player) so its a trade off on space or features. I'm glad I found one of the last of these (so much cheaper than iPod and so much more for the money) and I wouldnt hesitate to buy other iRiver products.

4 out of 5 stars Good for now...IRiver does it again: reliable & easy to use.   June 4, 2005

Originally intending to buy a Creative Muvo Micro N200 256 MB or San Disk 256 mb player, I saw the $99.99 (after rebate) IRiver player at Best Buy and bought it quickly, expecting a long-time name in the business like IRiver's MP3 players to work well. And, when I arrived home, I was surprised to see it work like I imagined: easy to use. It came with some pre-loaded songs from the most common genres: Rock, Pop, R&B, Classical, and Jazz which was nice, though most of them weren't from today's biggest artists.

MP3:
IRiver gives you three booklets that help you install the system easily, and I quickly did so with no prior knowledge about IRiver's software or system itself. I was quickly placing my music onto the system, and to my surprise, after placing 14 songs and 2 large audiobooks on the MP3 player, it was still well and fuctioning with lots of space left for more.

This is decent space. A lot of people want the more expensive 4 Gigs and 6 Gig players, but I personally think that for the exercize guru or simple MP3-beginner, this is fine. If you want 15,000 songs (which I doubt most people have), take an 80 GB hard drive and a killer price, but this is fine for the music user who deletes most of the old music. And even so, you can place that music on a C.D. and use a C.D. player for it later.

Voice Recording:
Another good feature about this system is voice recording. You can record your voice or someone else's voice. This might be good for recording your professor's lectures or your boss' game plan for the quarter. It is a very nice feature to use. Yet, if your mouth isn't too close to the Mic, it won't pick it up. This machine is very sensitive.

FM Tuner:
A lot of people buy IPods and Creatives without the FM/AM tuner, which is a bad thing. You can get live music from your local channels, like usual on the IRiver as well as setting presets like channels (like you would do in your car). This really helps for the person in a rush (though I doubt I'll use the channel system).

Others:

Hold Button- This button is very easy to use, and is the most functional button & most useful in the system. For exercize gurus who enjoy using a small but powerful system to run with, hike with, or canoe with, this is a great feature. If you don't want your MP3 player clicking buttons automatically by accident when is is bouncing in the case, slide the Hold button, and all buttons will suspend their functions. Therefore, nothing will happen if a button is accidentially clicked.

IRiver Music System- This is a great system for uploading music onto your IRiver system. First of all, it is from IRiver, so it works fine, and secondly, it is easy to use using the File Transfer Wizard. It helps you transfer music, audiobooks, and other audio files in WMA/MP3 format to the system.

Overall, I give the system 4 stars, because I've just gotten it. I suggest any warranty you can get on it!
