The Best August 21, 2008 I've owned my Logitech Harmony 550 for several years and I am very pleased! A breeze to program for simple tasks and not bad for complicated tasks. Occasionally, it will have a minor hickup but nothing to worry about with the help button. The best thing is, now my wife can turn on everything she needs with the touch of a button! Highly recommend! In my opionion, the best remote I have ever owned.....I've ownded a few!
VERY NICE! August 19, 2008 just to let you all know you dont have to be tech savvy to program this remote it is real self explanatory.although previous remote programming experience is definatley a plus.this is my 5th universal remote and in the past i have used alot of touch screen remotes and i always got sick of flipping through pages to do commands.i was able with this remote to be using the dvd input on the remote and still be able to control the volume on my tv and receiver at the same time very helpful than having to switch back and forth.the reason i didnt give it 5 stars is because when you press a command it takes a pause before the component reacts no big deal though.this thing will even turn on my xbox 360!really sad that ps3 is bluetooth that would have been nice to control ps3 also.and i dont know where people are saying you cant read the screen when the blue light comes on.i can read what it says just fine.so anyways for the money you cant go wrong with this remote.
It's great and easy! August 19, 2008 We haven't had this remote long so longevity is not part of this review. However, it works great. There was NO difficulty in setting it up to work with all of our equipment. Before I purchased, I had confirmed through the Logitech website that it would control our equipment, by model number - Panasonic Plasma, Panasonic Blu-ray player and an Onkyo home theater and Motorola PVR. Knowing HOW your equipment is connected is as important as knowing WHAT equipment you have in setting up this remote. For instance - if one of three TV HDMI connections is used to connect to your PVR or DVD player, you should know WHICH HDMI. The same would go for component and optical connections. We had just moved our equipment around a bit so I was familiar without having to go looking at connections.
I downloaded the software, followed the instructions and the remote works like a charm! Now, it's as easy as pushing ONE button to move from watching TV to watching a Blu-Ray movie, as opposed to uncounted buttons on 3 different remotes! And, at this point, I had done NO tweaking. The Harmony mimics the other remotes depending on your activity. There were some buttons that did not translate from the old remotes but they were not basic function buttons like on/off, volume and channel. Our TV didn't get the "return" button which is mainly a menu button. Those missing buttons can be programmed individually.
We are very pleased with the remote, so far.
Simply Brilliant August 18, 2008 I have both this and the 880 and they are awesome. 1 remote to rule them all.
For the money, it's the best I've found. August 18, 2008 The Harmony 550 is one in the line of univeral remotes sold by Logitech. From what I gather, the 550 is similar to the other models with the exception of the bells and whistles which might enhance the form factor or visual experience of the other devices.
Unlike other brands of universal remotes I've used, this one connects to your PC for programming. Programming is done in a very intuitive fashion in that you are walked through a series of questions to help the device learn how you use those remotes you want programmed into the Harmony 550.
I found the programming to be quite simple. I also found the device to work very well once it has been set up. The buttons on the remote are based upon the action you want to execute (such as "watch TV") rather than the devices you want to operate. By hitting the "watch TV" button, the remote's software turns on all of those devices which you need to have on to do such.
An added value to the Harmony 550 is that it makes life easier for those guests who watch TV at my home. In the past, it would have been necessary for them to use one remote to control the satellite and basic TV functions. They would then have to remember to use a second remote to turn the TV off from standby mode. Now it's all done with a single press of a button and I don't have to worry about my guest leaving equipment on.
If you buy this device, one suggestion that I'd offer is that you write down the model numbers of all your A/V devices and which settings (such as inputs on TV's and receivers) are used for which activities. This will speed up the programming process.
