At the time perhaps worth it, totally not worth it now! November 28, 2008 I bought this 2GB Philips MP3 player about 3 years ago on Black Friday because Wal-Mart had it sale priced for about $99.00, usually $130. Comparably at the time, I felt this was a worth while purchase because the competition 2G Apple Ipod Nano was selling for $199.99 and did not have an FM tuner or recording function as this unit has. I think the Nanos had the color screen at this time and you could also store pictures, but for the 100 bux difference, I was willing to sacrifice that.
Fast forward to today - I still have this unit and I use it fairly frequently. I realized the moment I bought it that there were NO accessories for it at all. All I could find was an overpriced case on the Philips website for $30 dollars and nothing else. Same thing to this day, I am stuck using some old Ipod cover that doesn't fit it right. It did at least come with a silicone cover and neck strap. This unit still uses a hard drive unlike the new MP3 players out now, so on start up it makes some standard clicks. I have encountered some problems with this unit overall. It does freeze up a lot, especially if you are forwarding through songs quickly, it's bound to freeze at some point. If you have a playlist on automatic shuffle, the shuffle shuts off when you turn the device off so you always have to re-shuffle it when you turn it back on. Otherwise, it will just play the next song after the one that was playing when you shut it off instead of shuffling. This is the worse thing about it! I haven't downloaded any new firmware for it recently, so I would hope they fixed that. The battery life after all this time is horrible. It was okay when I got it but now it won't last more than a few hours on a full charge probably. It is also HIGHLY inaccurate at reporting the amount of battery it has. Sometimes I will turn it on and it will be flashing like it will be dying soon, then it all of a sudden goes to half battery. So I don't believe it when it says it is running out of battery, but then it dies suddenly. It only plays music, MP3 and WMA format. It has 10 preset stations for radio, but I have found that the reception on it is pretty poor. It has equalizers which are okay, and bass boost. It has a mic for recording, but I have used this once and didn't want to waste the space I have on there. You can store files on it, but with USB drives who really needs that unless you are really low on space. It's not color screened, and I always keep the backlight off to conserve the battery but when it's dark it's hard to see anything unless you have the backlight on. The buttons on it can be confusing, especially if you are trying to go back and forth between a playlist and the main page. What I do like about this thing is that it easily transfers MP3s on it with Windows Media Player, and it has pretty excellent sound.
I would give this MP3 player a C- and I will never buy a Philips Mp3 player again. For the little kinks it has, it's not worth it. If you buy this today, I wouldn't pay more than $20 for it used. I just bought a new MP3 player for half the price I paid for this one and it blows it out of the water! This one will be retired to my car, permitting I can find a radio tuner and charger that support it!
Horrible waste of money January 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After downloading songs, listening to the device for a few minutes, and shutting it off, the device has not worked for me since. I have tried everything and it just won't work. I have reset it and it still will not work. I am very disappointed. This was a Christmas gift to me. I have wanted an MP3 for so long and my husband scrounged up some money to buy this for me and I can't even use it. Do not buy this garbage.
Garbage in a sleek case April 17, 2007 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Oh boy...where to start. I received this little 2GB wonder and was immediately impressed with the look and feel of this little gadget. Already owning a Creative Zen M, 30GB, I thought this would be a nice player for my son. After reading the directions, I fully charged the battery and prepared to download songs for my son.
The connection to the computer was easy and the GoGear player was found immediately. I proceeded to download songs. After about a gigabyte worth of songs made their way down to the device, my son eagerly stated that was enough (okay, he's 8 years old). I disconnected the player and it seemed to go through an initialization.
I showed him how to use the player, which buttons do what. I played the first song and...it locked up. I looked at the troubleshooting guide and followed the reset procedure. I turned the GoGear back on and it played my first selection. I navigated around the song list, demonstrating to my son how to find the song, band, or genre (yes, he understand genre) of his choice. He went on his way and enjoyed the GoGear for the first hour or so.
After an hour of playing songs, the GoGear locked up again. My son remembered the reset feature and continued on. After a while, sometimes a song would play for 20-30 seconds and then skip. They'd do this a few times, we'd reset the player...and it would be fine again. This happened until later in the evening when the battery (understandably) died.
I placed the device on the charger again for a full charge. The 5 hours later, I took it off the charger and it no longer would function. It would power up and then shut down. I tried resetting. I tried hooking it up to my computer. Nothing worked. It was dead. I worked with Philips for about a week to get an RMA to send it back.
I received the return authorization and shipped the devices (at my expense) back to Philips for an exchange. After two weeks, I received the new device. The face was all scratched up and clearly used...and abused. I charged the device up and hooked it up to the computer. I downloaded the songs and everything seemed fine.
I turned the "new" player on and tried to play a song...it played for 10 seconds and started to fast-play; fast forwarding through the song while playing it. The volume was extremely loud. When I attempted to turn it down, I found the volume button was jammed. It was obviously stuck.
I was done with the Go Gear players and done with Philips/Magnavox (I was burned on a VCR/DVDR last year). I have been twice burned by them with no possibility of winning me back.
Philips/Magnavox's quality is clearly absent and their customer service is less than sub par.
