5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Reception - Buy this Radio !!   September 5, 2008
I've in my mid-fifties, and have purchased more than my fair share of Table Radios in my life.

My new Cambridge Soundworks 705 arrived this week, and honestly I was shocked ! I've never owned a Radio that is so easy to use, with such intuitive controls, with sound so rich and clear.

In the past I've owned the original KLH (made in Cambridge, MA), the original Advent Model 400 (ditto), and several Tube (yes, tube) Radios that were all quite good. Recently I added the Teac R2 ($110) and the Eaton Sound 100 ($150) to my collection. NONE of these approach the Cambridge Soundworks 705.

First of all, I listen to quite a bit of AM Radio. Every radio I've ever owned required turning the entire set one way or another to tune into AM properly. This is awkward and ugly. NOT the Cambridge Soundworks 705 ! The 705 has top-notch reception of every AM Station I've tried, with no repositioning needed at all. I didn't think anyone made a set like this; I didn't think it was even possible.

Next, the Controls on the 705 are completely intuitive - you can toss the Owner's Manual away. In fact, you don't need to read it at all ! The Teac R2 and Eaton Sound 100 each have several tiny buttons, that perform very different functions. It's very easy to press the wrong button, and operating these radios often becomes an exercise in futility. For those radios don't lose the Manual - you're going to need it.

And the sound ? For clarity and range the Cambridge Soundworks 705 exceeds anything I've ever owned (though the Advent Model 400 comes quite close). The Teac R2 is inferior on every station, and is hard to tune even on FM. I don't recommend the Teac R2 for anyone. The Eaton Sound 100 tunes with tiny buttons - hardly intuitive. When you're finally on the Station you want, the sound is quite good. But to tune AM even the Eaton requires the familar twisitng and turning - very annoying.

Finally, we all own numerous electronic gadgets that use the familiar Power Brick. Our electric outlets and power strips are cluttered with them, and each time I buy some new gadget I need to juggle them all around to fit the new one in. Of course the Eaton and Teac have these awkward things. But not the Cambridge Soundworks 705 ! It plugs right into the wall with a good old-fashioned tiny power plug - whew !

If the other Cambridge Soundworks products are this well designed and built (I'll bet they are), I'd highly recommend you give all their offerings a second look. I know I will.

4 out of 5 stars Great simple little radio!   May 3, 2008

Hi,
I have recently purchased the Cambridge Soundworks 705 straight from the Cambridge website because it is only $79 over there. I also purchased the Cambridge Soundworks i765 from J&R. They are both great radios. I was surprised with the 705 because it looks very light but you can feel some good solid weight in there on the speaker side which is a good thing. Surprisingly those indicator lights that help you tune in to the stations work so well you do not need an lcd to tell you what station you are on. It has a built in antenna which works ok, the good thing is you have the option of using an external antenna as well but the bad thing is they do not supply the external antenna with the radio. I had to take one that luckily I found in my closet & attach it to this, you receive much better reception with the external antenna. It is a pretty sexy little radio. It sounds so good that I forget it only has one speaker. I have noticed my coworkers passing by staring at it wondering how much I paid for it I bet. That is another thing, one of the reasons I purchased this was because I wanted to get the best radio I can get without breaking the bank & also for it to still look simple, if I got something that looked too fancy, then people would think I get paid too much & then it would just make it harder for me to get a raise. Now if somebody says something like that all I have to say is "Look at the dam thing, it does not even have a screen! How can it be expensive?" I would have given it 5 stars if it included the external antenna. I plan to buy another one but in white for my kitchen at home. I'm going to call Cambridge to see if it is water resistant so I can put a white one in the bathroom as well.
