5 out of 5 stars The best MP3 left that still uses batteries   June 19, 2008
It is very adequate recording for those of us who need to document live sound. The battery, one little AAA, can be changed in any remote location without electricity, unlike most devices nowadays that only have built-in chargers--not good if there's no plug or no time to wait to charge. It downloads so many specific tunes I need to practice or learn; reloads quickly, plus the radio comes in handy. It is my second one, I outgrew the 512 mg, and now just use that for CDs; this one I use for all my C-tunes, or maybe next week I'll load up just G fiddle tunes, whatever, it is a terrific little piece of technology.

5 out of 5 stars Superb and you don't have to toss it in 2 years   April 26, 2008

I purchased this MP3 player based on internet reviews and also on the fact that it is AAA cell powered, not LI powered. I had purchased an 8 gig Zen but returned it because I could not justify paying $150 for an MP3 player that I would either have to replace or pay to have repaired in a few years when the LI battery finally crapped out.
The Zen was a wonderful sounding MP3 player, and so is the T60. Between SRS, the User EQ, and preset EQ's, you can make any kind of music sound full and detailed, not tinny or muffled. I'm using Skullcandy Titan ear buds, and the sound quality is truly amazing. Also, it has a built in FM tuner, which is good, and after a quick firmware upgrade, it is usable in WMP 11.
That being said, this is of course solely an MP3 player. Don't even think about pics or other media. The controls are bit difficult for big hands or for using without looking, and do feel a bit shoddy, but they've withstood what I've thrown at them so far, and I work a delivery route for a living so they get put through some bumps and bruises.
Over all, I am thrilled with this little gadget. I have a bunch of rechargeable batteries I keep charged, so I am never without a power course, and I won't have to pitch this thing eventually because it doesn't have an LI battery. I have enjoyed it so much, I bought a second !

4 out of 5 stars Good, nice features, plenty of memory -- but not great.   April 25, 2008
I just got an Iriver T60 to replace my aging Iriver IFP-799. There are many reasons to like the T60, but it leaves me wishing it had more of the qualities of the IFP-799.

I love that the T60 cost half as much as the IFP-799 did several years ago -- and it has four times the memory! That's great.

The T60 is smaller and lighter. That's great, too.

On the downside, the controls are not so great. The joystick really is imprecise. Actually, "imprecise" is a nice way of saying it takes 2 or 3 tries to actually select what you want. For example, you want to go to the next file, but you change the volume instead. (It's almost a cause to cheer when you use the joystick and get what you want on the first try.)

Sheesh! When the battery dies, it takes me to the beginning of the next file. Why not start where it stopped? That's what my IFP-799 did. Maybe this isn't a big deal with music, but it's not too nice when you are in the middle of a 30-minute podcast.

Deleting files is a long wait (with a fairly full player) as it, I guess, re-indexes the remaining files.

Finally, I just wish the T60 felt as durable as the old IFP-799. Time will tell.

3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners   April 5, 2008

This is my 4th flash mp3 player. The first three were from Creative: two MuVo TX-Fms and a 1gb Zen Nano Plus. I listen to lots of podcasts. For music, I rip CDs and transfer the files the low tech way, without special software. Because I travel a lot and hate lugging a charger, the ability to use AAA batteries is a must.

I was looking for a small flash player with more capacity. The 4gb Iriver T-60 seemed to fit the bill. After a week of daily use, these are my impressions:

The good:

- Sounds great and plenty of volume into my Phillips SHE5920 in-ear buds. Noticeably more volume than any of my Creatives. Painfully loud if you like. Lots of equalizer profiles to choose from.

- Battery life seems satisfactory. Lithiums and NMH rechargeable AAAs seem to last at least as long as they did on my Creatives.

- The ribbed case isn't a fingerprint magnet. I like it better than smooth cases.

The bad, from minor to major:

- The default display contrast isn't contrasty enough. When running through directories or files, you can't see where the cursor line is at. This is easy to fix. Set the contrast to maximum, "-10". "Settings > Display > LCD Contrast". You'd think Iriver would choose a default contrast setting that will allow you to see where the cursor line is at.

- Poor documentation. The T-60 comes with an utterly useless quick start guide and a CD containing the full user guide. The user guide stinks and lacks sufficient detail. For example, you have a choice of nine playback modes, represented on the display by nine icons. The user guide doesn't explain them, so I wasted half an hour figuring them out by trial and error.

- No "single file" playback mode that I can find. The Creatives let you play a single song or podcast once, then stop and go into the automatic idle shutdown mode. This is useful when you're drifting off to sleep. You know that the player will shutdown after your song or podcast is over, rather than running through other files for hours and trashing your batteries. Iriver has provided a workaround in the form of a sleep timer shutdown, but you have to manually turn it on and set the delay every time you re-boot the player.

- Can't be powered from your computer's USB port! You have to turn it on and waste battery power when transferring files or playing the T-60 through your computer! Are you kidding me? How hard can this be? I'd love to hear Iriver's explanation for this. Naturally, no such explanation can be found in the documentation.

- The joystick. It's sloppy and imprecise. Until you get a feel for it and acquire the necessary muscle memory to move it just right, it has a mind of its own, will take you to places you don't want to go to, and generally drive you batty. I seriously doubt that I'll ever be able to use it blindfolded, my benchmark for a good user interface.

SUMMARY: I can live with all of the T-60's shortcomings, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is looking for their first ever mp3 player, unless they were fairly tech savvy.
