Griffin iTrip AutoPilot FM Transmitter with SmartScan for iPod September 3, 2008 I had high hope that a Griffin-designed FM transmitter would be superior to other offerings. However, I am mostly disappointed with noise, sensitivity, and variability of signal, making me to not want to use it on a regular basis and simply opt for DVD-A, CD, or XM/Sirius sources. This product has not lived up to Griffin's reputation.
Looks good but totally disappoints September 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this unit to replace a different unit that quit.
Likes are the lighter plug with fwd, back and play/pause buttons, and my iphone charges during playback. The frequency display is illuminated & easy to change.
Dislikes are the one main purpose of this unit. Clear and continuous transmission. Every vehicle model will probably have different results, but results in my Lexus RX-400 are not up to my minimum expectations. The signal is weak resulting in static that ranges from a slight background annoyance to nothing but static. I kept my iphone on a gel pad on the console, which has the worst transmission. Moving the iphone on top of the dash improves FM playback slightly. Playback also faded in and out more frequently than I expected. If I hold the cord, playback improves. Hang onto the cord while driving to get nominal sound isn't what I thought I bought. Holding the iphone and waving it around to find a sweet spot produced nada, but gives me a bit of a workout. Maybe other makes of autos will produce better results, but this unit, in an RX-400h is totally unsatisfactory. This unit gets tossed into my obsolete junk box. "0" stars for performance, 4 stars for concept and and built quality. Averages out to 1 since performance outweighs concept. $57 for naught. Amazon shipping however, remains excellent as usual.
a bit of a bummer August 31, 2008 bells and whistles on an fm transmitter cost more but do no better of a job than the 10 dollar job you can pick up anywhere. i was hoping that the scan feature would allow me to get a clear signal, but i find that most of the time the channel it picks is far from the best one available. i end up hunting for an empty channel on my radio and ignoring the channel that the scanner found anyway. the rds feature is off and on again with no real rhyme or reason. i mean the feature is "on" but it really dosnt track what is actually playing most of the time. it will have the info from 20 minutes ago while i have changed songs, artists and everything. the bottome line is that if i had it to do over again and was planning on spending a decent chunk of change, i think i would have skipped the fm transmitter design altogether and went straight for a wired hookup. no static is the biggest reason.
Poor FM Transmission August 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this to be a terrible FM transmitter. It would not over power any radio stations. I tried every station manually and always got fuzz or fade over when playing the ipod. The Smart Scan did not work at all. I don't live in a densely populated area either. I have a 2 year old Trans Pod that still works very well, that I returned to using. The old one has a stand up base that I'm always knocking into, so I liked the design of the this iTrip and thought I'd give it a try. I was very disappointed even though I knew not to expect the sound from these transmitters to be ideal.
I returned it to Amazon. I need to say Amazon's delivery and refund services were outstanding, easy and prompt.
Worse $99 I've ever spent August 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am absolutely disgusted. This product simply does not work, period!! Griffin should be ashamed of themselves. I live in Rochester, NY and there isn't one clean frequency that it plays on without static. Even worse, the RDS feature that attracted me to this product in the first place is an abomination. IT DOES NOT WORK. Save your money and wait for another company to produce an RDS compatible product. I've switched back to my Monster Cable product and get static free reception all over the greater Rochester area on 88.1 (albeit without RDS functionality). Thank you Monster!!
