Flimsy remote, but otherwise very good product. May 31, 2008 I'd rate this much higher, as it's very easy to transfer videos and the playback seems to be lossless, but the remote is awkward and flimsily built. Sure, the remote stores the USB drive nicely when not in use, but the designers failed to take into account the human hand when it is being used. Another problem is that after just a little over four months, the fast forward and reverse buttons no longer work on my unit after it has been in use for a few hours. I must detach the USB drive from the cradle and allow it to cool off. So, to save frustration, I'd suggest investing in a inexpensive learning remote before any of the TakeTV remote buttons start to become unresponsive.
Aside from the remote issue, using this with a Mac is really a breeze. Drag and drop to put video on it, and deleting basically the same - drag it to the trash then empty the trash.
I'd just like to add that Sansa's Fanfare site, where Windows users could download network and cable television shows directly to their TakeTv units, has been discontinued. That doesn't leave a lot of legal options for DivX downloads now that DivX Lab's own [...] has been discontinued as well, and the remaining sites I know about are overpriced and have very, very limited selections - you'd be much better off using NetFlix now. Unless you have a good knowledge of the ins and outs of bittorrenting, Rapidshare, etc. for bootleg videos, or encode your own video to DivX or XviD, you might want to give this a pass.
All in all, I feel the owners of DivX Labs duped a lot of people into buying DivX capable DVD players and devices, and all the while never meant to continue providing free, legal content.
Warning - discontinued product May 1, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Before you purchase the 4GB model, make sure you check the price of the Sansa TakeTV 8 GB Video Player. As of this writing the 8GB model is slightly cheaper than the 4GB! The Sansa TakeTV takes the sneakernet approach to bringing videos from your computer to the big screen. It doesn't have the sexy factor of an AppleTV or a Vudu box, but it's also considerably simpler to setup -- just about as close to plug-and-play as you can possibly get. A great purchase if you always wanted to watch your computer videos on your TV and can't stand dealing with running network cable or figuring out arcane WiFi issues: the TakeTV delivers a lot in a small, easy to install package.
[EDIT] Sansa stopped selling the TakeTV on May 15, 2008, and the Fanfare online content has been shutdown. Since it's a discontinued product you should stay away unless you can get it at a a clearance price.
Didn't work March 26, 2008 When it finally arrived it simply didn't work. Would constantly freeze up. Returned it to Amazon. Got a LaCie La Cinema Premiere instead -- more than ten times the storage space and works great.
Good Enough March 23, 2008 This is in the present market one of the easiest and least expensive ways to get video from your PC to your TV.
The good:
Transfer files by simple drag and drop.
Supports AVI/DIVX.
Easy to connect to TV.
Video Quality OK, better than VCR worse than DVD.
The bad:
Remote is marginal- must be very close.
Sound quality cannot be adjusted. Sound can be muddy.
Fanfare and fanfare site are awful - don't bother.
Overall, it does enable watching video files on TV, and it is more reliable than transferring to my Tivo. It's actually an intuitive product and smart idea. Very reasonably priced too.
Amazing devise for the money March 19, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Sandisk Sansa TakeTV is an amazing USBTV product.
First to clear up a few misconceptions about the device: Sansa TakeTV accepts the following formats:
.avi .mp4 .divx
with the following codecs:
-DivX -XviD
It also accepts the following subtitle files: .srt
Now that thats done, on with the review. Sansa TakeTV works with all TVs, Standard 4:3 and Widewscreen 16:9 screens and has both NTSC and PAL options.
It has a few modes to view the content with the modes are as follows: -Original -Letterbox -Pan Scan -Fill
You can fast forward your video by pressing and holding > button for a few seconds and rewinding by pressing and holding the < button. By pressing and holding the up arrow button, you begin the slow motion forward, by pressing and holding the down arrow button, you begin the slow motion rewind. Pressing the square button once, you will stop the video with ability to resume it as well by pressing play button, if you press the square button twice, you will stop the video completely. Pressing the "i" button you get to see how long the video is playing and how much time it left to play.
The write speed of the flash drive is very fast, so you spend less time transferring files and more time watching them. There are no drivers to install, it acts as a large flash drive in the PC.
The remote range is not very big, and the buttons have to be pressed firmly to achieve the desired function.
