UNRELIABLE AND OUTDATED-- AVOID!!! December 20, 2007 I've owned two of the Sandsisk E140 and both died under very minimal use (i.e. a few hours per month in an office setting). The failure mode is wonderful: pick it up one day and it's dead. To their credit, Sandisk replaced my first unit under warranty; when the replacement also died they apologized but refused to do anything about it. I'll be looking for another brand of player, in part because while Sandsisk's CSR people are great on the phone, they ignore all emails to support-- despite the fact that their web page instructs you to email rather than call.
This unit had good features (FM and media slot) and I really liked the form factor. The ear buds are great...I'm actually glad I have two pairs now and will use them with other players. But the E140 is unreliable and Sanddisk won't stand behind them. The E140 is also long out of production now, so look for something newer and hopefully more reliable. I bought a cheapo Coby unit with similar specs for ten bucks at Office Depot...it doesn't really compare in terms of interface or even build quality, but it plays-- unlike the Sanddisk E140.
GREAT MP3 player for a little price! September 7, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Two years ago I bought this marvelous little gadget after copious research, especially regarding the everpresent iPod which was too pricey for me, anyway. Plus I'm a Windows user and a non-iTunes person. Get my music from other subscription sources. I use my SanDisk almost EVERY day. Still as marvelous today as the first day I purchased it and believe me, there's been a lot of living going on between then and now :-)
ANYWAY. You can't imagine how much music this holds! Plus, since it has zero moving parts (unlike the iPod which is like a mini-hard disk drive)it is very forgiving for use in "real life". Although, like any electronic investment, you want to use care and I keep mine in a user-friendly case I purchased the same day I got the SanDisk player.
In addition to being able to select how you want to hear your music (by song, album, artist etc....playlists)there is also quite a nice little FM radio built in as well as a rather sophisticated equilizer you can adjust freely. A feature you'd might not expect for relatively little money. Yes, it uses 1 AAA battery. However, it does not *eat* the batteries and you get a lot of play time per battery.
This was a HUGE plus when I learned that folks had limited numbers of times they could re-charge their iPods and then they had to send it BACK in to the factory. The major downer there is people told me in addition to being without their iPod, they didn't necessarily ever get their own iPod back! True, they got AN iPod back with a well charged or new battery...don't actually know. But in several instances people showed me iPods with other unknown people's initials carved in them and most had scratches and other marks which instantly told them this was never their iPod to start with. Then there's the thing of having to re-load all you music back into this new/different iPod you got back. Nope. I'm happy to use the AAA's. The SanDisk is happy to use re-chargeble AAA's as well, so it's not as though you'd be copiously adding to the landfills everywhere.
If you want a basic MP3 player because you want to carry your music with you, organize it how you'd like, be able to sync it easily to your computer to update with new tunes (and lose the ones you've decided you don't want to have in there any more), have the option of FM radio music, have an easily viewable though not color screen and have the opportunity to adjust the sound (via equalizer)for however you'd like to hear your music, live with it in *real* life (exercise, run, houseclean....whatever)and not shell out and arm and a leg, then I can't imagine why anybody would purchase something other than this player. It's perfect. Really.
No, it doesn't display videos or pictures. I'm thinking that's why they call it an MP3 player? [joke joke] :-)Anyway, I love mine. There's no reason I'd consider even "updating" it. Maybe if somebody has this stuff I've heard of but never seen called "disposable cash"....maybe they'd update it. Otherwise, why? It even has an expansion slot which accepts standard memory for this sort of gizmo.
If you're looking into this for yourself, or especially if you have offspring who are bugging you for an iPod, check out the SanDisk player in this particular model. It even LOOKS like an iPod, for those who really are into the brand thing.
