2 out of 5 stars since when are walkmans priced like antiques?   February 7, 2008

Im sure the walkman ( like many other on this site) work like a charm, bringing you all the memories of high school mix tapes. Indeed it is priceless. Buy why the hell would a walkman ever cost $119? I was appalled at the sight of a $45 walkman, but this... this just takes the cake. Unless its going to transport me to the past when i was pounds lighter and less troubled, paying this amount of money for an nostalgic piece of technology seems like highway robbery.

4 out of 5 stars rugged/good sound/a little weird   January 22, 2006

I've been using this to listen to cassettes while I work on a very active job. It's durable, has a great sound, but a couple of quirks. The volume knob is at the opposite end from the headphone jack, which means that I really have to have headphones with an in-line volume control, because I sometimes keep it in a pocket with the volume control at the bottom. And the tape goes in the back instead of the front, so I have to take it off my belt every time I want to change a tape. The FM reception with the included headphones is poor because the headphone cord is too short; with regular-length headphones, the reception is fine. Also, it is not auto-reverse, so I spend a fair amount of time taking it off my belt and flipping tapes. It has a volume limiter that I've never seen on any other device, and I can't figure out why anybody would use it. It also has a button that locks in all the settings you have so that you can't switch stations, turn off the radio, etc., by bumping into things and accidently hitting the buttons. On my job that's a plus. The sound and the ruggedness make this a good buy. And I can tell no difference between this tape player and a new one: The tape head, pinch roller and everything else seem new. Even the outside of it looks good, no scratches. Nice value.

4 out of 5 stars About to buy my second   August 4, 2003

I have one of these, and use it every day at work. I've had it something over 12-18 months and will buy another. I particularly like the five different buttons pre-programmed with 5 different stations -- push a different button and you are on another 'band' with five different stations on those five buttons. This way you can put in 25 FM and five AM stations. I also really really like the battery-level indicator. The little screen that shows things like station and battery-level is black-on-gray and although fine to read in normal light conditions it would be impossible in the dark. On the other hand the buttons are all easy to tell apart just by touch and I use them a lot without ever looking at the unit.

After all these months the 'chrome' finish is wearing off the corners. I drop the unit about once a month and it is finally affecting the radios' ability to pull in certain stations (which is why I am replacing it.) The cassette player is still working fine.

I work in an office built of steel and concrete and full of computers and other things that affect reception. I can get very few AM stations under these adverse conditions and have problems with some of the weaker FM. This is not the Walkman's fault.

I do not give this model a perfect score because the battery compartment is a bit smarter than I am, and once I remember which way to press the lever I have to use something to lever the batteries out because it's a tight fit. Also for my purposes I wish the volume knob were on the other end of the unit but that's just me -- I happen to carry the unit upside-down. I could wish that I did not have to open the cassette compartment to change batteries but it's not that big a deal.

5 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied!   March 16, 2002

I have had this product for almost a year now, and I am most satisfied with its performance.

The unit has excellent radio reception and is lightweight. The tape player, which I use quite often, has been very reliable; no skipping or munching. The headset is also lightweight and delivers excellent sound.

A-plus!

5 out of 5 stars Rugged quality well worth the money   January 6, 2002

A well made quality item. The comfortable headset delivers a clear stereo sound from a tape or radio station. There is no disturbance of the tape sound during jogging nor any strenuous activity that I have yet devised. Tuning of the radio stations is easy, the reception borders on perfection. Overall the unit stands up to rain, sleet and snow, unnoticed when carried in the hand or in a parka pocket it is of solid construction giving one confidence in taking it to the great outdoors. ...
