Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
Stay alert to the conditions that affect you with Midland's WR-100 weather/all-hazard radio. The unit offers S.A.M.E. technology (Specific Area Message Encoding), which preprograms the device to receive only those warnings that apply to your local area--you can choose state, county, and/or nearby counties. The single-speaker radio offers 25 programmable county codes, access to 7 NOAA weather channels, time/date and alarm functions, and a choice of voice, siren, or tone alert.

In the event of special warning broadcasts, the monitor is automatically activated along with a loud tone, an LED light and an alert message on its 8-character LCD. Emergency weather bulletins include alerts about tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, ice/snow storms, and other severe weather. Other emergencies might include Amber alerts, explosions, fires, or hazardous chemical spills.

The radio uses the supplied AC power adapter or 3 AA backup batteries (not included). Batteries should give you approximately 24 hours of continuous operation; the clock will run for at least 10 days on batteries when the monitor is turned off (using the monitor on/off control).

What's in the Box
Radio, AC power adapter, and a user's manual.

5 out of 5 stars Good Value for the Money   July 3, 2008
This weather radio was easy to set up. It's also easy to operate and customizable to your preferences. It has many useful functions and few that are extraneous. I'd say it's one of the best on the market for the money.

5 out of 5 stars NOAA WEATHER RADIO   June 30, 2008
We received our NOAA weather and emergency radio one day before Iowa entered the worst month of tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and flash flooding in the history of the state. Believe me, we were grateful to have it keeping track of each emergency as it arose! We recommend it to everyone - even if they don't live in Iowa.

5 out of 5 stars Good Weather Radio   June 30, 2008
Good little radio for the money. Battery backup is nice so you can take it to the basement with you. Picking your county is helpful so you don't have to wake up for every storm going through the state. Its still a little annoying for it to go off in the middle of the night for a thunderstorm watch, but better safe than sorry.

Easy to setup and use. We've had several storms since we received it and it works as advertised. Happy with the product

4 out of 5 stars Does what it was made to do...warn you.   June 21, 2008

Seeing these in action (the organization I work for uses many of these), I decided to purchase one after one of the many tornado-producing storms our area has been struck by spawned an EF-2 twister about one mile from where I live. The nearest civil defense siren is audible, but not enough to wake anybody out of a deep sleep inside a house with the a/c running, not to mention the noise that rainfall/hailstones/wind make in competition.

Keeping in mind that any "warning system" is only as good or as fast-acting as the people monitoring the weather can declare a warning, I can say that this was a good purchase. Sure, it doesn't have an am/fm radio, but I already have a few battery-powered radios laying around. I bought this to wake me up when necessary. The SAME programming function is nice because you don't have to hear what counties not even close to you are getting. My only "complaint" is that you have to manually turn the NWS broadcast off once the alarm has sounded, but since you have to get up to turn it off, you would theoretically check outside or turn the TV or radio on to see what the commotion is all about.

Bottom line: if you want something with low frills that has a very loud alert siren, get one of these. For the price, you can't beat it, and it may save your life.
