Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
Not everyone wants to listen to a CD or MP3 compilation when exercising, which is where this Sony S2 Sports Walkman armband radio comes into play. Equipped with a slim, lightweight body and a digital tuner that picks up not only AM and FM stations but also local VHF TV channels (2 to 13) and weather stations, the radio offers a great way to listen to your preferred public radio show, catch the local baseball broadcast, and jog to your favorite DJ's rhythms while running, skating, or working out at the gym. The device also features 30 station presets that make it easy to switch from one program to another, letting you choose among five TV, five weather, 15 FM, and five AM radio presets. And because of its compact housing and minimal weight, most listeners will barely notice the radio while running or cycling--a major advantage over bulky portable CD players.

The Walkman is more than just a radio, however. Both athletes in training and casual users who are working themselves into shape will welcome the stopwatch and split and pitch timer, which records split times with the press of a button. The added functions make the device a valuable companion while running, sailing, and pursuing other time-sensitive activities, while also reducing the amount of equipment you need to bring along. The Walkman also features convenient up/down controls and an angled LED display, so workout kings and queens can easily decipher information while they're on the run. And unlike many portable radios, the S2 Walkman prioritizes audio performance by employing Sony's Mega Bass Sound System, which boosts the bass tones to create a richer, fuller overall sound.

The Walkman comes with both an armband and a belt clip for hands-free use, along with a set of sports headphones. It also carries a one-year parts warranty.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent product   July 28, 2008
I purchased this product for my family-in law who wanted to listen Chinese stations. First, I didn't consider this product because of price, instead I purchased a Coby manual tuner $9 radio, which only picked up some major FM stations, and I ended up returning to get a better one, which was this Sony Walkman. This works excellent, picked up all stations including minor ones, easy to find a station you like because of digital screen, not much extra noise compare to the others. I should have purchased this from beginning. Looks cute and light.

1 out of 5 stars A radio that doesn't pick up radio   May 26, 2008
I read the reviews online but my impression was Sony makes quality products so I tried it. I went to a local store to make the purchase (to make returns easier if the reviews turned out to be true). I knew it was worthless and being returned the day I bought it. I drove around in different parts of the city to test reception and it was UNLISTENABLE everywhere I went. It wasn't small amounts of static, it was UNLISTENABLE. I would review other features, but if it doesn't get past the "does this radio pick up radio stations" part of the test you fail automatically with no need to go any further. I don't know what has changed in Walkmen technology but this is an embarassment to the Sony name. Maybe the overseas place that designs the Walkmen can't test for American radio waves. With all the technology today, why can't Sony get a simple radio player right? I hope Sony realizes their declining radio Walkmen sales are due to product quality and not because people don't buy radios anymore.

1 out of 5 stars Junk! Junk!! JUNK!!! My second one in series all suck.   March 10, 2008
Got this for Christmas. It did not last two months.

This is actually the second one of these overpriced units I have owned and both have exactly the same problem. They are probably fine if you don't actually use them for what they advertise. First, the armband/belt clip is held on by two hollow plastic posts which are about 2mm in diameter with less than 1/2 mm of plastic in the walls. The very first time I put the thing on my arm and ran these posts broke off when I removed my running jacket. The store refused to actually return the device because it was "abused" which did nothing for my opinion of the product or the retailer. But it sill worked although I did not trust the band any more. What was worse was the sound quality suffered seriously and I realized that Sony had not fixed the very same design flaw that I had in the last one. The head phone jack solder joint have failed. In the last model I purchased the only thing holding the jack in place was the solder joints and a poor quality drop of glue. I soldered the joints, and it worked okay for a while but it was still a pain and eventually I just dumped it. The new model has basically the same problem. It appears that Sony tried to do something with the junction but it is obviously not enough since the VERY FIRST TIME it was dropped the jack broke like the old model.

I can only say if you are looking for something to sit somewhere and look good then if you think this thing looks good it will work for you.

1 out of 5 stars Complete waste of money   January 22, 2008
I wish I would have read the other reviews for this product before I bought this Walkman. Complete waste of money. The radio gets bad reception even outside. Inside at the gym I tried to listen to the tv sound that is broadcast over FM, at first I thought the transmitters were not turned on because I received nothing but static. But no, the person next to me had a $19.99 radio with a brand name I never heard of was picking up the signal just fine. The Walkman that I had back in the 80's (plain AM/FM with a cassette player) got better reception than this. It is completely worthless to me. I suggest you look for another brand.

5 out of 5 stars Good Value   January 14, 2008

I purchace this radio to replace an old worn out Sony headset. For the price the radio does what is expected. The lower price of AA batteries compared to AAA would make it a better unit if it ran on AA. My experience with Amazon.com has been excellent. Be sure to compare prices from outside sources. Do not rely on % discount off Retail, no one ever paid those origional prices after 60 days of the product introduction.
