5 out of 5 stars Every cancer patient should have one of these!   August 27, 2008
It is becoming more obvious with each study that Vitamin D is crucial for maintaining health. Cancer patients are with alarming frequency quite deficient in Vitamin D, even in southern climes. People are afraid of sunburn and skin cancer and don't dare go out in the sun. This device measures UV exposure for 4 skin types and SPF - level 1 for no sunblock and on up. Once you input these two things, you are ready to go out safely in the sun, any time of day.

Go outside, press a button, and the monitor tells you how long you can stay in the sun right then without having too much UV exposure. Press another, and it counts down the time for you and an alarm sounds when it's time to go inside. It's perfect for sunbathing, taking a walk, etc. It can be a little tricky to set up, but after that, this sturdy little measuring device is quite simple to use. I believe cancer centers should be giving these to their patients.

1 out of 5 stars your common sense measure UV index better than this one   July 22, 2008

the product we got is defective. the liquid display can only show partial of the digits. If you try to measure uv index behind window glass, it always shows 0, no matter how strong the sun is, which doesnt make sense to me.
As for the UV index measurement, it always show me 2 levels below what the weather forecast says and it doesnt tell you more than what your common sense can tell you.

5 out of 5 stars Save yourself from Sunburn   August 14, 2007

I purchased this before our trip to Florida because my 1 year old is a red haired, blue eyed boy and I didn't want him to get burned. We all know that you need to apply sunscreen before going to the beach but using this monitor to check the UV index showed that it would only take 10 minutes for him to burn so even just walking around the block would have been enough. For the first time ever I went to Florida and came back without a sunburn but a nice tan.

4 out of 5 stars Seems to Work Well   June 12, 2007

I love gadgets so I could not pass this up since I live in the desert of So Cal. I have used it only to measure how bad the UV is on a given day and give me an idea what the risk is. I did not use the timer to push my exposure. It has a count down timer for how long you can be exposed based on the current UV measured. I always use a hat and sunshine when in the sun for more than a few minutes so I don't rely on the timer. (You can sure see the difference in UV levels from early morning to noon). The unit is suppose to allow you to select skin type, but I can't seem to be able to set it. It is why I did not give it 5 stars.
