Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
The Sony XDR-S3HD HD Radio receives multiple program streams over a single FM frequency with FM Multicasting. Text based information such as artist name and song title scroll across the LCD display. The easy to see large, full-dot backlit LCD display features adjustable brightness, contrast and display modes. AM is upgraded to FM fidelity, while FM can deliver CD quality sound. It is different from satellite radio because these signals are transmitted from public accessible radio stations. Best of all, no monthly subscription is required. The wood-based cabinet with simulated cherry finish is designed to fit into any decor with style.

Product Description
Experience more choices, crystal clear sound, and no subscription fees. HD radio gives you more channels to choose from so you can hear more of what you like. Enjoy music the way it was meant to be heard with AM stations that deliver FM sound quality and FM stations that sound like your favorite CDs. All you need is an HD radio receiver. HD Radio, Discover It.

4 out of 5 stars Screen contrast defective   September 4, 2008
From the moment I plugged in the radio I knew there was a problem with the lcd screen. The screen was visible only set at the most negative level.Sony support was totally useless as they were ignorant of the problem and refused to make a switch unless I first set the unit back. I will be returning this to the dealer for a swap--maybe. I may change my mind at the last minute. Otherwise the radio is excellent, good reception and high quality product

4 out of 5 stars HD radios-not user friendly   August 7, 2008

This is a good-sounding radio but lacks some very important user features. One would be a battery back-up. If the power goes off, you lose all your settings, which could be dozens of things you must set up. Because of this, I bought a UPS (battery back-up) just for my radio. The other thing is the lack of dual alarms. So now, I must use my old wind-up alarm clock, too. Otherwise, I have no complaints. This is the radio I would recommend to a friend buying a HD radio.

3 out of 5 stars Incomplete technology   July 30, 2008

This Sony is a fine radio but it fails to include one of the most important features of HD radio technology: access to multi-casting. At least one station in Philadelphia broadcasts two programs but this radio does not have the technology to access the second program. What is the point? The seller gave me a good price & delivery service but the radio is a disappointment for this feature. Otherwise, it has good sound & the reception is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Not always HD   July 1, 2008

I ordered this HD radio because NPR in Las Vegas combines their classical station (relatively low power) with their news station (relatively high power) using the HD format. I receive the news station, albeit with some static at times, and so HD was a means to receive their classical station.
But after receiving the radio and using the FM Reflect antenna, I found that the news station was not quite strong enough to produce the classical station in HD mode. However I could receive the classical station, with a little static, due to the superb sensitivity of the radio. It is analog, rather than HD (hybrid digital) and so the disappointment is tempered with the fact that at least I can hear the classical station, and will keep the radio because of that.

4 out of 5 stars Great sound, good quality, but a couple flaws   June 29, 2008

This radio puts out great sound, with plenty of volume, for something in its size and price range. However a couple things keep it from deserving 5 stars, as others have pointed out. The power cord is attached and has a *huge* transformer, making it quite a challenge to plug in if you're like me and you put it on a desk, placed against a wall and you have difficulty working a giant transformer behind the desk to plug it in! The other major con is the LCD screen. It provides plenty of useful information. However, the black-on-white approach makes for a pretty powerful nitelite when I get ready for bed.

The LCD should have been designed less like a notebook screen and more like a traditional clock radio, with light-up characters, not a light-up background. Yes, you can turn down the brightness; there are three settings (low/medium/high). The high setting looks great during the day but it's a flashlight at night. The low setting works when all the lights are out, but makes the screen pretty hard to read in daylight. I go with the medium brightness setting, but it still ends up being a bit bright at night. Oh well. It still sounds great, looks great, and has both an aux. input and a headphone jack, along with AM/FM antenna jacks, making for an extremely versatile and useful radio! I got what I expected reception-wise; of course, the extra HD channels here in Chicago are a big bonus (HD1 channels generally sound of CD quality, while the HD2 channels sound a bit worse, like an FM radio). The remote is nice, and a great bonus being that I use this in my bedroom as my clock radio.

The alarm is kind of tough to manage as well. Seems like a last-minute feature. Gets the job done - I picked the Sony over the comparable iLuv for its looks and the remote control, and so far I guess I'm still happy I did - but the iLuv surely must do a better job with alarm management. I mean I have to navigate through a menu to turn on and off the alarm! There should be an alarm switch right on the top! And I hope you don't need a snooze button - cause this thing's never heard of one!

And what's up with the XM and Sirius icons? Maybe this radio was once intended to do more than it does? Maybe someday if Sony produces a better, upgraded model, I'll move this to my kitchen and get a newer model for my bedroom - assuming they figure out how to make this thing more bedroom-friendly.
