great little radio. NOT great customer support. August 12, 2008 I needed a radio that would get my favorite local radio stations, which I can no longer get here in the sticks (of NH), also because it seems classical music, alas, is no longer being transmitted widely, except on HD radio. I chose to go this route because I can get ALL the best stations in the US and abroad with this radio. That said, it took some doing to find and set up a router (went thru 3 routers) that would work. But work it does. The radio is fairly easy to use, the instructions are clear, which is good, since as usual, the help phone number is nowhere to be found. The sound quality is excellent and the reciva.com website is fairly easy to use. However, I cannot get my favorite podcasts to work. They cut out and stop altogether. When they restart, they start from the beginning. I cannot get the pause, fast forward or reverse to work, either on the radio or on the remote. I wrote to Sangean asking for help and have received no reply. I should have titled this review Great radio, LOUSY support.
Move over XM August 4, 2008 I will admit that I am a radio junkie, this radio has been the best find that I have run across. After several years of being an XM user, I decided it was time to let that go and try out the WIFI radios. This Sangean gives you almost instant access to any station on the internet, you can find by genere, country or location. I do wish it had more than 12 memory slots but really it does ok, if you had more it would become harder to find your favorites without scrolling through a long list. I have not tried hooking it up to the computer yet, but if you do you will be able to access all of your MP3 files. one day perhaps I will try that feature. I would highly recommend this radio to anyone who is looking to expand their radio listening experience and to all XM and Syrius users who find they aren't using their radios for anything more than a in house radio which is what mine was. So give it a try, Amazon has a good price, or you can order directly from www.ccrane.com
Probably the best choice of current Wifi Radios July 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had my WFR-20 for a month now and I'm very happy with it. Set up very easy and I had the radio connected within minutes. I first tried a wireless connection with the unit on a shelf about three feet away from router, a Westell Versalink model 327W; could not connect. I believe this was a problem with the router since my wife has problems connecting with her Dell laptop. I then ran an ethernet cable from the router and connected immediately to the network. The sound quality is equal to or better than a Cambridge Soundworks HD radio I have.
During the first ten days, I used the radio in my home office. Then I ran a fifty foot ethernet cable to a hub in my bedroom and it still performs flawlessly. I also ran an RCA audio cable from the out jack on the back of the radio to a ZVOX speaker used for computer audio in the office, works great. Also, I often use it with a Sangean Versacorder to record distant late night talk shows or other programs. All things considered, I'm happy to give this unit five stars and have no regrets with this purchase. Wifi is the greatest thing to happen to the radio medium in the last sixty years and the WFR-20 is probably your best bet of the radios currently available.
Piece of Cake July 27, 2008 We set this up in about 5 minutes...the interface is intuitive. Whatever it may lack is not terribly important to me. I wanted to be able to cancel XM satellite, stream Ambient or Chill for a few hours when I go to bed, and control the whole thing with a remote. Works for me!
Great for internet radio, a dud for streaming audio on home network July 18, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased this radio in January 2008, with high expectations. In many respects, the Sangean Wifi Internet Radio delivered.
Pros: Great look - sort of retro-meets-vintage with the modern lines and bakelite-like casing. The remote and radio controls are easy to use and intuitive. The sound is impressive. I am LOVING listening to a wide range of talk radio and music stations on this unit. Some stations come through with poor quality, but that is the fault of the streaming, not the radio. I love the Reciva.com interface. I can find what I want and add stations with a few clicks, and updates to the radio are quick and smooth. The Reciva.com forums are very helpful and interesting to read, as well. The fact that I have access to about 10,000 stations worldwide is overwhelming, but wonderful. I have been able to find some very interesting music options, including a dozen BBC channels, public radio stations from all over North America, and all kinds of news stations from everywhere you can imagine.
CONS: Although the online literature says that this radio can access and stream your computer-based music library through your wifi, I have yet to figure out how this is actually possible. I have followed the instructions and solicited help from users in the Reciva.com forums, to no avail. (And I am not the only one with this problem.) I finally gave up and transferred my library to an ipod, which I plug into the Aux Input on the back of the unit. Music sounds great through the input, but I would have preferred to keep the music on my computer and not buy the ipod.
Another big con is the range of the device's wifi. I have to keep my radio within less than 10 feet of the router to pick up the wifi connection, even though my wifi signal is strong enough to be picked up by my laptop two floors up and outside of my house.
Overall, this is a good unit that does a lot of cool things. I think they should improve the wifi range and work on the problems with sharing music from computer to radio. I haven't used any other wifi radios, so I can't compare them. I will say, however, that wifi radio is one of the coolest new gadgets out there. I am loving it!
