i question his taste level November 27, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Whew. That's something I never thought I say but I really have to question the taste level of this book. Most of the makeovers aren't good. One woman looks quite a bit worse than when she started out. Issac and his style team gave her a hideous bleach job that made her look ten years older. Another woman, who was seriously obese is dressed in shiny fabric that made her look even huger. I was really startled. Buy Tim Gunn or Nina Garcia instead. This was a waste.
Great and useful read. Will pass it along November 26, 2008 I heard the author on the radio and decided to purchase the book. It is great fun! Lots of good suggestions that many would not think about, and corrects some real mistakes in fashion just by reading!
One of the Best Style Books I've Ever Read November 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is hands-down one of the BEST books on the subject of style and fashion that I've ever read ... and I've read a lot of them. Almost all seem to focus on "classic" styles that are supposed to look good on all women. They put me to sleep.
Thus, I had reservations about looking through this book in the bookstore, since I figured it too would be all about boring laundry-lists of "must-have" styles in dull colors. But I decided to look through it anyway, mainly because of Isaac Mizrahi, whose show on the Style Network was one of my favorites.
I was blown away by the creativity and inspiration in this book! It features real women of ALL different sizes, ages and ethnic backgrounds, made-over by Isaac and his style team in amazingly beautiful ways using many of the same, basic, classic pieces that made my eyes glaze over in other fashion books. Thus, Isaac uses styles that flatter most women, but changed around to suit different body types using different kinds of shoes, accessories, jewelry, scarves, etc. I ended up marveling at Isaac's extraordinary creativity even more than I did before.
One of the great things about this book is that it inspires the reader to go through her own wardrobe and see how to wear the clothes she already owns in new and different ways, instead of going out and buying more and more clothes. THAT in itself is something to celebrate! Especially during these days of economic hardship that affect so many of us.
I love this book so much I bought it here on Amazon, which I think has the best deals on it. It's a book you can give to pretty much any woman, of any age and body type. It's a book that celebrates women!
Which is pretty much why I adore Isaac Mizrahi. He has an obvious love and appreciation for women. I think this book is a showcase for that. :o)
Finally - a book about style that inspires and delivers! November 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been a huge fan of Isaac Mizrahi for a long time and I couldn't wait to read this book. I knew he was hysterical but the jury was still out as to how much this book would truly tell me about "How to have style." Well, this book is unlike any other book on style I have read (and I've read them all!) It is not a book that just tells you what to wear. It is a book that teaches you how to find your OWN style and inspirations ... and isn't that what style is? Don't we all want to express our unique selves and not just wear the same thing we see on everyone else? Isaac covers lots of things - like hairstyles and color, outerwear, dressing for special events, jewelry etc ... and uses models that look like ordinary people and end up looking like extraordinary ordinary people with incredible style. There were lots of really new and creative ideas and suggestions that really gave me a fresh perspective and confidence to try some new things. Lastly, I was NOT left feeling like I needed to head out shopping to buy all the "Style" Isaac was talking about - actually I was inspired to get rid of a lot of stuff that I didn't really like or fit into. This enabled me to see what I really had and how I could mix it up in new and exciting ways. I reinvented a few amazing pieces with a $10-$20 trip to the tailor. If you love fashion (or struggle to find your "look") you will love this book!
How to Have Style November 13, 2008 1 out of 12 found this review helpful
This book did not meet my expectations. I expected it to explain how to create your own style. After seeing the author Isaac Mizahi talking on TV about the book I was expectring a how to guide. I would not recommend this book. I normally pass my books on tom friends or give to Goodwill. This book is going in the garbage and is the worst review I have ever written for any book I have read.
