From the Manufacturer The R-09HR is a professional, high-definition recorder that travels light and performs like a heavyweight. With crystal-clear 24/96 fidelity, the R-09HR is the new flagship of EDIROL’s award-winning R-series recorders.
24bit/96kHz linear PCM + I.A.R.C. (Isolated Adaptive Recording Circuit) Experience precise audio reproduction, and clarity with a wider dynamic range when using the higher bit and sample rates that the R-09HR offers. The R-09HR supports up to 24bit/96kHz linear PCM recording, which has over twice the digital audio resolution of a standard audio CD. I.A.R.C. is a newly developed, dedicated analog circuit optimized for recording with the R-09HR's onboard A/D converter. Electrolytic capacitors provide stable, reliable power with an independent power source for the analog circuitry, and another power source for the digital circuit board, thus eliminating DC interference between components in the R-09HR. The I.A.R.C. also contributes to high quality, low noise MP3 recording with the R-09HR.

Professional-grade, high-sensitivity stereo condenser microphone built in When recording with the R-09HR, there's no extra gear to buy or cables to connect. A professional quality stereo microphone is built right into the unit, complete with a dedicated analog input control, mono/stereo selector, low-cut filter, limiter/AGC (Auto Gain Control), and a gain boost. The onboard electret condenser microphone elements are very compact, ultra-sensitive, and placed to capture three-dimensional sound naturally and accurately. To further avoid possible noise interference from internal components, the microphone housing is separated from the main circuit board?another sign of quality design from EDIROL (For use an external microphone, the R-09HR offers a 1/8” stereo mic input). Compact, hand-held body allows for convenient portable use Small enough to fit in a shirt pocket, the R-09HR has a new tactile feel that is easy to grip. It also has a user-friendly graphic display for ultra easy operation. The large 1.5” OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display provides wide view-ability, at-a-glance level meters, peak indicators, and additional recording information on the screen. Preview Monitor (Small Speaker) built in Without headphones, you can easily check out the recorded sounds right after the recording, thanks to the preview monitor on rear panel. Wireless remote controller included With the included wireless remote controller, transport functions such as recording start/playback start, fast forward, rewind, volume control, and input level control can be accessed from a distance away. This allows the R-09HR to be placed in exactly the right position for recording, and allows for quick and easy touch-less operation. High-speed file transfer via USB 2.0 connection to computer The R-09 can connect to the outside world via USB for importing/exporting audio files to a computer very quickly. The R-09HR supports Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0) mass storage so file transfers are very quick and convenient. The R-09HR comes with Cakewalk’s “pyro Audio Creator LE” CD-ROM. This software is perfect for WAV/MP3 audio file editing; to trim cut, or fade audio sections, to burn audio collections to CD, publish a web page with sounds, to publish a blog with audio, to podcast an interview or performance, and so on. With “pyro” the R-09HR package becomes truly a complete recording solution suite from recording to CD-burning. Wide variety of optional accessories Perfect for many recording applications from rehearsals, recitals, concerts, interviews, podcasts, research, photo journaling, law enforcement, to nature and field recording, and business meetings, the R-09HR optional accessories are useful to pros and novices alike. *Cakewalk “pyro Audio Creator LE” is compatible with Windows Vista and Windows XP.

Great product!! January 7, 2009 Recently purchase the Edirol R-09HR and, boy, great buy!! Is all that I expected and still discovering its potential. The flexibility is as reviewed by others and recording at club venues of my favorite musicians around here is a delight. It does capture everything so one must be aware of more than just the music...recording is ACCURATE/ sensitive so makes you listen 'differently' (not a bad thing).
This is a professional, pupose-built device, easy to use and while it is slightly more than the others, you definently get you money's worth (the remote option got me on-board)!
One complaint (and this is mentioned fairly often) is the GOUGING price of the desirable case/stand combo...it's disappointing that this option is WAY(!!) over priced. I found a stand necessary and unlike the standard screw mounts common on many electonics, this 'option' came not incorporated on/in the device but only on the case. The case & stand go for at least an additional $50...and no discounts were to be found!
I jury-rigged my own with a nut, Super Glue, velcro, a plastic spacer and a stand (I swear the SAME Edirol offers)that I picked up for $5 at a Big Lots. Worked great...total price, maybe, $6. Come on Edirol, 'German' or not...drop the case combo price!

Yes, this is a good one December 25, 2008 By now, there are plenty of Glowing Reviews, so you know this is a good product.
I bought it to replace an "old" (about 12 yrs old) Mini Disc recorder that I've been using regularly to record piano lessons and piano performances for students.
I fired up the Roland today and tested it, and it's just great, super easy to use, and it's easy to have confidence that it will do everything I am wanting, really well.
State of the Art... December 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
No doubt there will be improvements in portable recording tech in the coming years.
Competing products from Sony and Olympus seem to have better construction but are either prohibitively expensive or don't deliver the goods in the sound department without external mics.
Competing products from Tascam, Zoom and M-Audio are significantly less refined and more difficult to use, with sound artifacts inevitable from cheaper components.
This unit hits the sweet spot in the market right now. It's priced affordably, has good built-in mics, robust audio construction that allows recording of even soft music with acceptable noise levels, is easy enough for a cave man to use. Push the button, place the unit, set the levels, push the button.
I'm pretty sure (Shure?) you could extend the performance of this thing with the right set of mics.
If you have a concert hall, you're using the house system to record, and it will most likely provide much better electronics to reduce distortion, interference and noise.
If you are out where most of the music happens, you don't have any of that stuff ready at hand. This gadget will get you 90% there.
Edirol R-09HR mp3 recorder November 25, 2008 An excellent device, simple to use and trouble free. Makes it easy to record concerts / events and quickly make a CD audio disk (or multilple copies). Highly recommended for sound technicians, you will use it for things you haven't imagined yet.
This thing is amazing! November 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am not a professional recorder, but this little unit amazed me. I was able to stand about 6 feet from an incredibly loud Rock and Roll musician and speakers and the recording was just like I heard at the show. My friends and I were simply blown away. Comments I heard were "I have to get one of those" and "It sounds incredible" among other rave comments. I can't comment on the units specs as I don't really understand them, only the result which was astounding! My only complaint is that the maximum file size is 2 gigs which means that if you record at cd quality levels, you will either have to "split" the file or the unit will split it for you at 2 gigs. For a recorder that apparently will take up to a 16 gig card that seems petty and unnecessary. However, aside from that little limitation, the recording was as I said, amazing and I almost forgot to mention, easy. The tiny remote control can be used for everything but turning the recorder on and off. A great investment and when you are finished the recording will be a wonderful memory of the music for you and your friends.
