Product Description
Capture everything. Plug the ICD-UX80 directly into your compatible PC and enjoy easy, drag and drop file transfers. Its built-in 2GB Flash memory lets you record up to 590 hours of lectures, personal notes and more. You can even play back your favorite MP3 audio files and listen on the included stereo headphones. This compact and attractive digital voice recorder features five recording modes, digital pitch control and Windows and Macintosh compatibility with no software required. MP3 Stereo Recording and Playback allows you to playback up 18 hours of MP3 files and record using the MP3 file format. 2GB Built-in Flash Memory uses a high capacity IC chip, which may be recorded over and used again and again with distortion free clarity. USB Direct Connection allows you to plug your voice recorder directly into a USB port on a computer or hub, eliminating the need for cables. Drag & Drop File Transfer allows you to easily drag files from your PC right to the voice recorder with no software required. Voice Operated Recording (VOR) stops the recording during silent pauses, saving valuable recording time, then begins recording again without missing a single syllable because of the digital buffer. Digital Pitch Control and A-B Repeat allows recordings to be heard at slower than normal speeds without distortion, to facilitate transcribing and editing; or at faster than normal speeds, to move quickly to a desired portion. Selectable Microphone Sensitivity (Hi/Lo) enables you to record different situations, from group meetings to individuals, more effectively. 5 out of 5 stars Sony digital voice recorder   January 6, 2009
This was a gift for my musician husband. He is very satisfied with this recorder. This is an A+ device.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for the money   December 15, 2008

I use this recorder for interviews, and the recorder sits on a table or desk between the person I'm interviewing and me. I find the built-in microphone adequately sensitive. Before the first interview use, I tested it out in my large living room, walking around and back and forth from close to far. I don't whisper but I don't have a really loud voice, and everything I said everywhere was audible. In fact, with the microphone set on high sensitivity, it was TOO sensitive; set on low, it's just right. Moving the files from the device to the computer is simple drag and drop, and the built-in USB connector is a huge plus.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is (1) the LCD is very small and hard to see, and (2) it's not instant-on, it takes a few seconds to boot up. Both are minor inconveniences.

To the reviewers who complain of:

Battery life: Remember to set the "hold" button before putting it away. And I carry a couple of extra AAA batteries -- it's not like they are heavy!

Buttons get pressed and turned on in a bag, so battery drains: See previous suggestion.

Difficulty of arranging albums when using the device as a player: It's a recorder, for heaven's sake. If that's what you want to do, get an MP3 player.

Sound barely audible without headphones or speakers: It's not intended to be a player. Earbuds were supplied (crappy as they are). Use a decent set of headphones or auxiliary speakers. But why would you want to be listening on the recorder, other than as a quick check? Isn't the point to put the files on your computer and from there burn them to a CD or transfer them to an MP3 player (which, by the way, one listens to with headphones of some sort anyway).

5 out of 5 stars As advertised   November 29, 2008
Exactly as advertised. The thing just works. Great recording for a fair price, if slightly high. But, for that price, you get a recorder that does a great job, is lightweight, easy to handle, has all of the required jacks, and works....works is a BIG thing with digital voice recorders, and the ability to insert and pull the recordings off the recorder without proprietary software is HUGE!

5 out of 5 stars Good little recorder   November 9, 2008
Very clear recordings on the best quality settings. Ridiculously huge capacity. I did a test, battery lasted 10.5 hours. Easy to use/understand how to set up after reading the directions. Chose this one over a competitor because this one records in MP3 format. Just drag the file to your computer, play it in iTunes, transfer to a CD, all easy. One person commented you cannot move the recorder about while recording - that's true - it'll pick up the recorder being dragged about or being banged about. So if it's in your pocket, it'll pick up any movement.

3 out of 5 stars Well as long as what your recording is loud...   November 7, 2008
it's very sleek, very james bond-ish, its so smalll I could'nt believe it. The speakers are pretty useless, you have to be close to what you're recording, but hopefully the electret mic I ordered from ebay for 8 dollars will change that (YES I SAID 8 DOLLARS, ON EBAY! DONT PAY 57 DOLLARS FOR IT ON AMAZON.) Its pretty cool that you can play mp3s on it and the simplicity of computer interfacing is right on point. A bigger mic would've been better, but it will do the job.
