2 out of 5 stars Dream Machine - Until CD Totally Failed!   December 2, 2008
This thing was great. Paid up for it because it had remote control the size of a large lipstick case. I was in heaven. Kept remote on my desk and could control sound remotely when I was on the telephone.

Then the end of goodness: the CD player portion began to fail part-way through a CD. The motor sound could be heard through the case but the CD was not turning. I fiddled around trying alternate CDs (all commercial originals) but they all stopped playing at some point -- sooner and sooner, then no CD would play at all. [I expect there is something wrong with a belt or pressure plate inside, but repair of such devices is not feasible.]

ONLY 2-Stars because CD is the MAIN function and I feel I 'paid-up' to get a device with a remote to obviate jumping up & down to adjust volume or skip tracks.

Radio reception is not outstanding and moving from preset-to-preset station is sequential and is tedious -- there is no direct selection of any preset, you must cycle up or down through the list of presets.

Cassette playing was an 'extra', seldom used, bonus feature.

I noticed that this model, SONY CFD-E95, showed on other sites' REFURBISHED goods offerings.

4 out of 5 stars Worked well for years   September 15, 2008
I was surprised to read all the negative reviews for this boombox. I've had one for years (I don't remember exactly how long), and I love it. I've used it almost every day, indoors and out, on AC power and on batteries, with CDs, tapes, and radio -- in other words, I've given it a good workout. I've never had the "no disc" or "hello" problems that other people have reported. Finally, after all that use, I've worn out the play/pause button for the CD player, so I need to get a new boombox. I'm thinking of just getting another Psych. My only complaint, and the reason I didn't give it five stars, is that the motor for the tape player doesn't seem to be strong enough to handle particularly full cassettes. It sometimes stalls, and I've had to rewind some tapes by hand in order to get them wound tightly enough so that the tape player can continue playing them. For most people, though, who listen mainly to CDs, this might not be a problem.

4 out of 5 stars Sony boombox   July 19, 2007
The sound is very nice in my kitchen. The only thing is it isn't a true red like it shows in the photo. It is almost a red-orange. The color was what I was really going for so that is my only disappointment.

2 out of 5 stars Petite Musicbox: a good fit for you?   May 31, 2007

When I purchased this item, I was in a tiny college dorm single. I picked this product out of the lineup because:
1. It is a Sony (You can't deny that Sony has a great run of products)
2. Compact design and clever handle
3. Despite its size, it still includes a cassette if ever the mood strikes to make a mix tape

Admittedly, I had BIG expectations for such a small product. My problems with the product were:
1. Bass only has an "On" or "Off" setting. I am a firm advocate for manual controls. The sound you get out of this unit is pretty shallow. You need the ability to find a good balance of both treble and bass for optimum music output. Just not possible with this unit.
2. Jogger skips tracks, not volume?! It's just counter-intuitive. How often do you need to jog through tracks quickly, back and forth? At least for me, I only occasionally skip a song or two. I'd much rather have the jogger control the volume - especially when I need to quickly turn down the volume.
3. Digital display is only visible from a higher angle at a close range. Sometimes I just want to know what track is playing without having to get up and walk across the room.

Don't get me wrong, there are some good parts about this boombox too:
1. Its petite design was perfect for my cramped living situation. Fits in my milk-crate!
2. It produces a high volume for such a tiny design. Like I said, not too great in sound-quality, but pumps up the volume!
3. Old school recordable cassette feature. I know a lot of youngsters today may not need it, but being able to make a mix tape is still charming <3

Be sure you know what you're looking for in a boombox. At the time of my purchase, this boxette was just fine. Its convenience was more valuable to me than its capabilities. Now that I'm living in a larger space, this little bugger just won't cut it. I'd rather be stashing away my $60 towards somthing with a deeper, crisper sound and better functionality.

4 out of 5 stars Snazzy little player   January 10, 2007

This CD/FM radio/Cassette player has a totally modern look to it. So much so, that this is the second one I have had to purchase due to the fact that someone else obviously liked it so much, they stole my first one. It has a great radio that I use at the office, a remote control that allows me to mute the sound when I get phone calls, and a great CD player. The jog dial is somewhat confusing to use, but the tuning buttons work well. I would definitely buy this again, (but hopefully not because of a theft this time).
