Quality of manufacture very poor.
Quality of reception VERY poor.
Automatic Frequency control has no affect.
No segreation of band reception- walk over all frequencies such as FM intruding on Shortwave.
Unable to receive any of advertised bands such as Air Traffic, Emergency or Weather.
Am returning this product because it is useless. NO STARS

The Emerson MBR-1 radio is a very versatile and fun radio. With so many bands to choose from: AM, FM, SW, WB, TV, CB, AIR, MARINE, you can easily spend hours and hours enjoying your favorite stations or searching all the bands to find other interesting broadcasts.
I found the reception to be excellent on all bands. The only problem is, as one other reviewer pointed out, that there is bleeding of the FM band into the AIR band. But the AIR band does work. I live near Newark Liberty International Airport and I have been able to hear many communications from pilots on this radio. It is sometimes difficult to tune into the exact frequency though, because they don't broadcast continuously, usually it's just a few seconds at a time so you have to be tuning in at the right place at the right time.
I've also had no problems listening in on CB communications. Again, it's a matter of tuning in at the right time as sometimes CB traffic can be very sparse.
The Shortwave band is one I particularly like to explore. It sorta makes you feel more connected to the rest of the world when you listen to a broadcast from a foreign country. The radio has an external antenna jack, which I use to plug in a longwire antenna to boost reception. The only problem with the Shortwave is that coverage is only from 4 MHz to 12 MHz.
It receives TV audio extremely well. It's too bad TV is going digital in Feb '09. After that, we won't be able to pick up TV audio anymore.
FM sounds great. You can turn the music up very loud as it has a pretty powerful amp. Although it's not in stereo, you really won't notice or miss it at all. The FM also has switchable AFC. I usually always leave this on.
The band I probably listen to the most is AM; love to listen to baseball games. The rotating antenna on top of the radio is great. Since AM reception is directional, you can rotate the antenna for best reception instead of having to turning the whole radio. I'm always tempted to use it as a carrying handle despite the warning printed on it "DO NOT USE AS A HANDLE".
Oh, and the radio can also be used as public address loudspeaker. A microphone is included as an accessory. I'll have to admit I haven't tried out this feature and don't plan to anytime soon. I don't like the sound of my own voice, so dull and monotonous.
Possibly, the only real complaint I have about this radio is the inconsistent feel of the tuner, at some points feeling a bit tighter and other points a bit looser. But overall a great radio to have, especially at only $30. It's well worth more than twice that much.

AM, FM, and SW reception is excellent, as is the sound. This beats any clock-radio, even those with 'stereo' speakers. TV reception seems fine, but not much TV where I live; I generally don't care for TV audio away from the TV, but I can get local NFL TV broadcasts when I'm in the kitchen. Haven't fooled much with CB or air bands, but I can't imagine why I'd want to listen to that anyway.

First the good. AM recption is outstanding, the best I have ever heard. Public service band ( police, fire, taxis, repairmen etc..) reception is good as well, including weather. SW isn't bad either. TV audio is great. FM reception is also very good. selectivity is not bad for a radio so inexpensive.
Now the bad. The FM band, ends at 108.00MHz. From there, it should go into the aviation band from 108.00 up to around 130MHz or so. I know my airport freqs, and it simply isn't working. This radio does not go beyond the FM band at all (as it should and as it is indicated on the dial), and proceed into the air band, it just starts over at 88 MHz again and goes right back through the FM band, stopping agian at 108 MHz, so I cannot hear aircraft or controllers. The dial is marked clearly otherwise. So in effect the air/fm band is fm only :(
The CB band on my radio did not work at all either. I live about 1 mile from a very busy I-10, and I should hear CB galore. I hear only vauge FM instead. I hope I can get one of these that work on all the bands Emerson claims in exchange for the one I just got. If the radio would've worked as advertised, I would've been delighted.

It was great having the multi bands. We live where we have a lots of power outages and the radio saved the day for us many times. It is also so portable that we take it everywhere especially the back porch. We are never without weather, news, TV or music.
