4 out of 5 stars Perfect addition to any hone emergency kit.   June 17, 2008
The Stormtracker is a great multi funtion tool which should be in everyone's survival pack. The unit can run either off of 3 AAA batteries, or it can be powered via the built in hand crank dynamo. The NOAA weather Alert feature allows you to keep the unit in a standby mode while under battery power. While in standby mode, the unit will start to 'beep' when there is a severe weather warning in your area.

We recently were hit by severe thunderstorms, tornados and massive flooding. Our power was out, and the Stormtracker was our lifeline. We used it to keep our cell phone charged as well as listened to the weather reports as the storm was passing over us.

My one complaint about the unit is that it lacks a place to store the cell phone adapters. A small storage compartment would have been nice.

Despite good features due to poor design I would not recommend this product.

First , the 3 AAA batteries last about 3 days when left on Alert mode. No provisions have been made in this unit to be able to plug in a 110V power supply so you could leave it on weather alert mode 24/7 with out changing the batteries every 3 days.

Second:the crank charger feature has no battery fully charged indicator so you don't know how long to crank it before it is fully charged. I does not mention in the directions how long to crank nor tell you will only get about 15 minutes of use when cranked. (INFO found at Web Site and product info on line.)

One of the key features of this crank charger feature is that you are supposed to be able to use it to recharge your cell phone. The directions mentions that you could damage your cell phone due to insertion of the wrong tip adaptor. A number of them are provided hope one fits your phone. yet no mention is made to warn you of the possibility that incorrect power supplied at the wrong voltage or polarity could damage your cell phone. Further, there is no specification on the unit, in the directions or at the manufactures website as to how much power this unit produces and at what voltage when using it in crank charger mode.

Third, the tuner knob is hard to move in small increments to lock on to a clear signal . It is very basic set up in that it has to be re-tuned each time to find a station when you change from FM-AM-or weather. So if you forget to tune into your local weather channel when you switch it back to weather alert mode it may not activate properly.

The Alert Mode alarm should have a reset or automatic silence after so many minutes. If you are away from home you could come home to dead batteries. For instance it could lock on to a LED weather alert check indicator and shut off the alarm say after 5 min to give the battery more life.

Lastly, the LED lights are bright and work well but have no indicator light or side window in the light housing to show that the light is on. Which then makes it possible to put the unit down on a hard surface and have the light on and not know it resulting in dead batteries in a short time.

To sum it up good idea but bad design features make this Weather Alert Radio-Flashlight a strongly not recommended product!

I am returning my unit. Alan NH
