Amazon.com Product Description
Professional quality sound and high-level functionality are what distinguish the ICD-MX20VTP Digital Voice Recorder. Whether you're recording grandma for an audio-genealogy or interviewing a famous celebrity, Sony has designed a device that makes super-pro recordings and is built to last.

It features up to 11.5 hours of recording time on the built-in 32 MB of flash/memory--plus the option of using Memory Stick. Duo or Pro Duo media (ranging from 32MB1 up to 512MB2 ). This dual memory records dictation on the built-in Flash memory or the small, compact, high capacity memory stick. The memory sticks are removable and allow recorded cards to be readily replaced for additional recording.

Sony has equipped this device with several features that will make you feel like you have your own recording assistant. The memory stick offers the ability to organize message folders by type, offering the ultimate in efficiency and versatility. You can store messages in up to 300 folders, helping you keep recordings organized and easily accessible. The advanced digital voice operated recording (VOR) feature actually stops recording during silent pauses, saving valuable recording time. Then, thanks to the digital buffer, this intelligent machine begins recording again without missing a single syllable. Plus, the ICD-MX20VTP has a full function LCD display, showing the number of recorded messages, recording length, date, time, and a remaining battery power indicator.

The ICD-MX20VTP features a slide control switch for quick, responsive recording; built-in stereo and directional mic functions for recording in different environments; and a playback speaker. All this functionality is powered by two AAA batteries that should run for up to 10 hours continuously.

With the voice email function, you can record spoken email messages and send them later as audio attachments. The included PC download software will help you master this functionality. And with the Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred Voice-To-Print Software, you can easily convert your recordings into text. Finally, the digital recorder comes equipped with USB connectivity for high speed copying of files to a PC.

1 out of 5 stars Missing Software, Subsequent Arm Twisting   July 19, 2008

The seller, Best Source Office Supplies, did not provide the promised Dragon Naturally Speaking software, as described in "What's in the Box" in the product description.

Since I was otherwise satisfied with the purchase, I left only a moderately negative review (3 of 5), after which the seller contacted me and pressured me to remove the review, without making any attempt to provide the missing software. Suffice it to say that I was highly displeased at being first cheated and then strongarmed.

I have made a formal complaint to Amazon about this seller, Best Source Office Supplies. Best Source Office Supplies is currently under investigation by Amazon for violating its Community Rules, which read, in part, "any attempt to manipulate ratings of any participant is prohibited."

An Amazon customer service representative wrote, following my complaint: "I've forwarded your message to our Seller Policing team for their consideration."

Amazon has been all over this issue, and I have nothing but praise for the speed and professionialism with which Amazon has handled my case. Amazon is a great seller with outstanding customer service. This is just a case of a bad individual seller, and Amazon is doing the right thing. No ill reflection on Amazon at all.

As for Best Source Office Supplies, this seller is be avoided at all costs.

1 out of 5 stars No way to download Digital Voice Editor Software   April 8, 2007
2 out of 5 found this review helpful

I bought the ICD-MX20 a week ago. I was surprised that Sony does not provide downloads of the associated software named "Digital Voice Editor". Sony Customer Service staff told me that if you lost the CD that came with the box, you had to buy a new one. Only patches of the software are available to download.

This immoral policy violating the norm of digital appliance industries and should not be encouraged. Sony is demoting its brand name by offering poor post-sales services. Think twice before making your buying decision.

This is, so far, the best digital recorder I have ever had. Adding a 2gb memory stick, and you can record for over 90 hours. The sound is perfectly clear and sharp.

4 out of 5 stars A very good, small recorder   March 10, 2007

This digital voice recorder is very good and is easily carried because of its size. I am using it to record interviews. I put it about a yard away from the interviewee's mouth and it picks up their voices very clearly. At the same time, it is a few yards away from me and pointed away from me and yet when it plays back the conversation I can still hear the questions I ask (it is a little soft, but still easily enough heard). Because it can store recordings in different folders, I can keep my interviews separated until I can copy them onto my computer.

I wish it had an on/off switch to save battery life. I wish it came with the current voice recognition software (v. 9), which is supposed to be better than the one that came with the recorder (v. 8). Once trained, the software works well; it makes some mistakes, but not a lot. Because the interviews I am doing are about one hour long, it is not worth it to train the software for each person's voice. So, I copy the recording onto my computer and play it back from there. This allows me to listen to the interview and repeat it into the recorder. Once it is recorded in my voice, the software can make the transcript. A significant amount of clean up is needed after this, but it gets the vast majority of the words correct. This method is relatively fast and much less expensive than hiring somebody to transcribe the recording.

This recorder works fantastically well, but the instruction manual is sparse and hard to follow, so I had to learn how to use it by trial and error. Very pleased with the performance.
