Great sound! January 6, 2009 After doing some research, I settled on this unit as it appeared to be the best value. My expectations were pretty high after reading the reviews for this product, (also on Apple's website) but when I received it yesterday and tried it out, I was definitely not disappointed! It has great crystal clear sound with lots of bass if desired, and the volume can be turned up without any distortion. Very happy with my purchase!
The Great Sound January 6, 2009 I never thought that this tool could also sound, the truth is, I was looking for some speakers for my new ipod touch, and be pleasantly surprise. Better than the sound, is the ease of use and design.
Wow !!! January 6, 2009 Thats all I can say...I can't believe the sound that comes from these little speakers!!! It cranks!! Love it
Great sound; needs to ship with iPod inserts! January 6, 2009 Ordered and gave as a Christmas Gift. Sound is great - really good set of expansion speakers. AND, does not ship with an 'insert' for the iPod - it is only iPhone ready out of the box. You have to either order or find at an Apple store the appropriate insert in order to use with an iPod - Altec Lansing should really spend the extra nickel to ship the appropriate inserts the way Bose does. Otherwise, a solid performer as iPod speakers.
Great unit, minor issues for iPhone 3G January 3, 2009 The T612 is a great dock/speaker system for the iPhone 3G, though there are a few minor issues that prevent me from giving it a five star review.
As advertised, the device is properly shielded, so there is no signal interference from the phone when it's connected. The sound quality is quite good for my purposes whether I'm listening to mp3 tracks using the iPhone's iPod functionality or using another audio producing application like Last.FM or Minnesota Public Radio's audio stream application. The unit itself is quite easy to setup, just open the box, plug it in and away you go. It also includes support for connecting non-iPod mp3 players via an auxilary jack on the back of the unit. It even includes the cable for the aux connection which was really nice, I had assumed I'd have to buy one separately.
I only have two complaints about this unit. First, despite being advertised as iPhone 3G compatible, for optimal functionality with the iPhone 3G, you need the iPhone 3G adapter base which is not included with the unit. It is however available for free from Altec Lansing. Another reviewer mentioned that they had to pay shipping when they ordered their 3G adapter, I did not, so I'm not sure if ALS has changed their policies or what. Unfortunately I received notice that the adapter is currently on back order, so I don't know when I'll receive it. To be clear though, the unit will work with the 3G iPhone without the specific 3G adapter, you'll just have to fiddle with it to get it properly seated on the connector.
The other minor gripe I have about this unit is that when you plug in the iPhone 3G, the phone displays a message stating that the accessory isn't compatible and asks if you'd like to turn on "airplane mode". Since the speakers are properly shielded, this isn't necessary, you can just choose "No". Not a big deal but a bit of a nuisance.
Overall I'm very happy with this unit and from what I can tell, there isn't a better alternative on the market at this time.
