Product Description IMediaKey, USB MultiMedia Keyboard For Macintosh is made with new curved two-tone translucent design. The keyboard is fully compatible with MacOS 8.5.1 or above and with USB spec and HID Class Definition.
Amazon.com Review For those of us who spend a majority of our days in front of our Macs squinting at the screen and clacking away at the keys, Macally has created the iMediaKey multimedia keyboard to make our lives easier. With the 19 programmable shortcut keys, you can access your e-mail, the Internet, CDs, games, and whatever else you choose to program with the simple push of a button. That means no more extra opening, clicking, dragging, and closing. Some of the keys are already programmed and fairly self-explanatory--the envelope icon means email, the speaker horn with three lines emanating from it means volume up--but the keys numbered M1 through M5 are waiting for you to assign as you see fit. To help you activate the iMediaKey's functions, a CD-ROM is included with the package. The disc features a clear, straightforward manual, for which you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 to access. The install program will bring up the iMediaKey Manager, which will take you through the programming process step by step. If you decide to reprogram at a later date, just use the iMediaKey Manager to clear out the former applications and start again. Users should note the programmable keys are not compatible with AppleScript, the built-in language used to automate tasks on Macintosh computers. Constructed of durable translucent plastic, the keyboard is sturdy and solid but still lightweight at 3.5 pounds. At nearly twice the size of the standard Mac keyboard, you'll need more room to fit it into your workspace, but you'll find that you're hitting the wrong keys less frequently once you get rid of the child-sized keyboard that Apple supplied. And the rounded space bar is great for those of us whose thumbs often miss the bar. With its 5-foot long USB cable, you'll be able to position the iMediaKey in whatever configuration suits you best, and the two extra USB ports on either side allow both right- and left-handers to connect a USB mouse to whichever side is most convenient. --Dana Van Nest Pros: - At-your-fingertips convenience
- Lifetime warranty
Cons: - Incompatible with AppleScript
- Must know shortcut key combos in order to program

JUNK! It breaks and CRACKS easily! August 13, 2007 This is why I try so hard to avoid getting anything other than an Apple keyboard. This one cracked right down the middle only a few months in, keys got stuck with the cracks, and before I knew it, the keyboard was this clumsy, large paperweight sitting on my desk. Although Apple's keyboards are junk as well (the "L" keys have gotten stuck on me since their iMac Bondi Blue keyboards), they sustain more everyday usage. I gave this keyboard a positive light for 2 months, and it gave out, but it lasted long enough as a non-Apple keyboard to get a 2/5.
Now MacAlly's iOptNet mouse is rock hard and very appealing (and has switchable covers and is transparent)...look around. Nothing beats it, and especially not anything from Kensington.
Edit: Nice way to edit my posts guys. I'll do my own edits, don't do 'em for me. >:
Great iMac keyboard August 1, 2007 I'm very pleased with my iMediaKey USB Keyboard. It comes with software. You load it on your iMac, and just go from there. You have buttons to program and other pre-programmed buttons for volume and playing media. It's great.
No driver software for Intel Macs January 10, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just got this keyboard in the mail. It replaces my Apple extended keyboard for use with my Intel Duo Core Mac Mini, OS X 10.4.8, 512 MB RAM. Apple keyboards get filthy very quickly, and the iMedia is to use while I clean the Apple KB.
I am using it to type this review.
Here are a couple of initial observations:
The "Quick Installation Guide" included in the box was not for the iMedia KB, but rather for Macally's iWebKey, a wireless KB that requires batteries. The included CD contains manuals and drivers for all Macally keyboards, each in its own folder.
The iMedia did not sit squarely on my desk. It wobbles like a table with slightly uneven legs. A small piece of cardboard strategically placed under a corner of the keyboard fixed that.
Since the driver software does not work with my Intel Mini, none of the programmable keys work- a major disappointment. I will post another review when Macally releases the new software, which their website claims is coming soon. It works with Apple's default KB system software, though, so it is as useful as the Apple keyboard.
The iMedia is much larger than the Apple keyboard.. The command key is slightly smaller than on Apple's keyboard. Acclimatizing to this is easy. The keyboard feels more responsive than Apple's. The iMedia's keys are textured, the Apple's are smooth. I prefer textured keys; my hands are often numb and the iMedia's keys are easier to touch-type on.
I have the iMedia connected through a Belkin KVM to both my Mini and my old Power Mac 8500, which runs on System 9.1. On _that_ computer, this keyboard is the bees knees. The driver software supposedly only works down to 9.2, but it installed without problem on my old Mac. All the features work terrifically well, including the power button and all the programmable buttons. If it worked this well on my Mini, I would give it 5 stars even with the wobble.
I have several bootable hard drives installed on my 8500 (upgraded to a G3 processor). One of them runs System 7. I intend to boot the 8500 from that HD and see if I can install the driver software there, too. I think it will work.
In summary, this keyboard is a fine choice IF the driver software works. It works okay otherwise, but just okay. Thus, three stars from me. Macally really should hustle out the Intel driver ASAP.
Comfortable, nice typing experience February 17, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm a fervent writer and when my Kensington keyboard broke down---I was dismayed because I really loved how it felt.
But boy am I glad that happened -- this macally imedia keyboard feels even better and more stable -- plus all the customizable buttons are truly awesome. I shalt type my next horrible screenplay that no one will ever read in true comfort.
The keys feel nice -- I am a very happy man.
serious problems November 24, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this months ago, had to return it only to find out that the replacement has the same problems, only worse. 1) doesn't allow my G4 running Panther to enter "sleep mode" beyond a few seconds 2) doesn't allow the hard drive to spin down except for about 30 seconds 3) even interferes with the screen saver. I did get quick tech help from Macally but their suggestions ("plug into different USB port" "zap PRAM" "try on different Mac") didn't change anything. So now the second one sits in mint condition awaiting its destiny, and I can't even honestly put it up for sale on Amazon or eBay. I am expecting Macally's reply on if I can get my money back or arrange for some different model, but it costs me about $8.00 bucks a crack to be sending these lemons back. Not good. However, the FEEL and FEATURES on this keyboard are next to none. Excellent firm, spring-back action on the keys which I highly value and one touch programable functions that are sweet little keyboard short cuts. So, here's the situation: if you want a great feel and excellent functionality and don't mind having your keyboard torment your computer, I have a deal for you. Send me your address and a cool $20 and upon some serious dumpster-diving I will ship it for free. :)
