5 out of 5 stars Excellent Radio, Perfect Introduction to Shortwave   April 23, 2008

The Sangean 505 provided my introduction to shortwave, and it remains one of my favorite radios. The sensitivity of FM is excellent, and that of the AM and shortwave bands is at least very good. The speaker has a bright and somewhat thin tone quality, which can be darkened by a tone switch. The radio also has SSB, which allows you to listen to CB radio conversations.

The 505 is a very good bedside radio because the window numerals are quite large and lighted, which makes them easy to read in the middle of the night. Even better, a timer allows you to program the radio to automatically shut off after 120, 90, 60, 30, or 15 minutes. This is handy for those who like to fall asleep to the sound of the radio. Finally, the 505 provides an alarm in the form of either a beep or the radio itself.

One piece of advice: some people complain that the 505 will not stand upright because the radio is so thin. This is true. However, there are two solutions to this problem. First, there is a fold out tilt stand on the back of the radio which allows it to sit at an angle. If this angle is not steep enough, than consider buying a radio stand from Universal Radio. This company makes several stands that hold the 505 (or other radios) at a steep angle that is perfect for viewing the window.

The Sangean 505 is not a deluxe super-sophisticated shortwave radio. It's a fairly simple and small-sized unit, and is reasonably priced. If you want a high-end shortwave radio, then consider the Sangean 909. Yet, the 505 remains a favorite of mine, in spite of my having used a number of other more expensive models. In fact, I bought a second 505!

5 out of 5 stars sangean radio   February 12, 2008

I was really satisfied with the radio. It will pick up other cities in my area. I live in a small town and most radios I have bought would only pick up our 1 oldies station. I can now listen to cities that are at-least 30 miles away. Batteries do not last as long as I like. Since I work outdoors all day I have to have battery power and I listen to it about 2-3 hrs a day and have had to replace 4 AA batteries about every 18 days. I have rechargeable batteries but have not tryed them on it yet. ALL IN ALL I LOVE MY RADIO.

4 out of 5 stars Sangean ATS-505P Review   July 23, 2007

I was looking for a radio that I could take camping with the assumption that I would have difficulty picking up stations, especially out in more remote western regions. I have only purchased one table radio in the past and do not know anything about radios unlike many people reviewing these. I have absolutely no 'professional' background in radios.

I researched on the net for some time and found Sangean continuously mentioned --- not always in the best light, but generally favorable.

I have found that the radio does have a really nice, clean sound. I have a far less expensive table top radio at home, but one that has nice, and larger speakers, than the Sangean. But the Sangean is as good, if not better, sound-wise.

The Sangean also picks up far more stations than my 'average' table radio which was my primary concern. I can't tell you if it's better or worse than other comparably priced radios, just much better than my 'average' home radio.

I do have to agree with some other reviewers that the radio has somewhat of a 'cheap' feel and look. But, the radio does perform as I hoped.

My only other, small negative is that the radio comes without 'feet'. I always have the FM antenane extended, and the radio will not sit up with the weight of that turned to the side. I'm going to have to fabricate something so it sits upright on a flat surface.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of radio for the money   August 12, 2006

As I write this, there is at least one Amazon seller that offers this radio new for less than $100. It is a good deal at that price.

I have 30 years experience as an amateur radio operator, and have used equipment on the low end, the high end, and everything in between.

This radio does quite well given the price paid. It seems generally very sensitive on all frequencies, except possibly at the low end of the AM broadcast band. The filtering is excellent. The manual is acceptable, but is not as good as some radios that I have seen. The single-sideband capability (a must for any radio that I use) is excellent.

Bravo to Sangean for producing a great budget radio.
