I've read all of the Darkyn books and this is the best so far. I've read just about every paranormal book thats came out in the last 10 years and this book ranks as one of my top 10 favs.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting   September 9, 2008
This is very good book. I love in books how they take historic events and twist them so they work for the characters in the book. This one is no different. You wont be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed   July 6, 2008

This is my first Viehl book, first taste of the Darkyn...and I don't think it is my cup of tea.

First of all, I thought it was a paranomal romance, but there is very little interaction between the main characters (Jayr and Bryne). Heck, 2/3 of the book isn't even about them. And within whatever pages left, their interactions were just...blah! Come on, these two have been together as master and servant for 600+ years, there's gotta be more "stuff" going on between them than that, if they really wanted each other that is. And I really have problem understanding how and why they fell in love with each other to begin with (especially for Jayr...what did she see in Bryne?)

And then, the book devoted so much to Alex, it almost seemed like she was the real lead. Obviously, she was the author's pet. I think Viehl wanted to creat and sassy, witty, kick-butt heroin with an attitude and a heart of gold, but unfortunely to me, Alex just came off as obnoxious, holier-than-thou, judgemental and meddlesome. Her I-am-right-and-you-are-wrong, I-am-the-doctor-and-your-are-just-dumbas*-barbaric-darkage-bloodsucker kind of attitude just doesn't seem very endearing to me. I found her supposedly witty way of speech to be smartas* rather than badas*, totally annoying and only serves to show off her ignorance and shallow thinking.

Last but not least, at the end of the book it revealed who Jayr's real father was, and that he had lied to the world all these hundreds of years and incriminated another man(even though a villian)for what he did to Jayr's mom...it's just not honorable. And he is supposed to be an honorable hero, at least legend said so. Ending a book like this just leaves bad taste in my mouth.

All in all, if you like plot twist it may be a good read, but I also like good character development and relationships too, so I think I'll stick with Kresley Cole and Patricia Briggs for now.

4 out of 5 stars Much better than the last one!   June 23, 2008

The world of the vampires can be a dangerous one....

Jayr has loved Aedan mac Byrne ever since their first encounter. As his seneschal, she has done everything she can to keep him happy and content. Byrne fears his darker warrior side, fears that one day he will snap. Now, he is prepared to give up his role as suzerain after the tournament. But someone else had very dark plans, plans that could destroy more than just Byrne and Jayr....

Lynn Viehl integrates the world of the vampire with tales of old to produce some very interesting results. In EVERMORE, the myths and legends of Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest are explored. At first, the emphasis on the past was a bit distracting, almost boring at times. However, as the storyline built, it became quite intriguing. The ending was exceptionally satisfying.

Jayr and Byrne are two of the more likable characters Lynn Viehl has created. I initially enjoyed this series when it started with Michael Cyprien and Alexandra Keller, both of whom play a large role in this book. However, later characters tended to grate a bit for me. Jayr is by far one of Ms. Viehl's best characters to date. Not only is Jayr willing to give it all for love, but she also refuses to be treated differently because she is a female serving in the traditionally male role of seneschal. Byrne, too, is an excellent character, a man who struggles with his warrior nature and wants to protect others from himself.

The Darkyn series should be read in order. Without a doubt, the characters and plotlines continue to weave in and out of the series and there are numerous things that only make sense when read in the context of the series as a whole. While some aspects of EVERMORE do stand alone, the complexities of Darkyn society and the various relationships are much better understood if one has read the prior books.

EVERMORE is not a book that will appeal to all. Lynn Viehl provides a unique approach to the vampire theme, one that is at times gritty and even quite brutal. Lynn Viehl shows once again that she has a flair for taking chances with her writing.

4 out of 5 stars Still loving her style   May 4, 2008

Viehl writes awesomely, and her plots are still full of twists and surprises that holds you in awe. I use to love all her books, but this one I didn't like that much as the previous ones, but I still love it (the others got five stars, this one four), because I didn't got to relate to Byrne that much and it took me a little time to grow attached to his suzerain, who ended being an appreciated character. I didn't like Robin a lot either. I usually love all the characters created by her, they are strong types and very interesting, well designed ones, but I suppose all of them couldn't be likeable by everyone...

I still loved the book and it got better and better, and as usually happens with this author I ended up loving her book and getting surprised at the end. Now I'm awaiting the next one, about Valentin Jaus, who I utterly love.
