For a single disc, this is an admirable chronological tour of superstar Eric Clapton's mid-'60s-to-early-'80s career. It begins too late to include his gestational work with the Yardbirds and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. However, the singer-guitarist's days in Cream ("Sunshine of Your Love," "Crossroads," "White Room"), in Blind Faith ("Presence of the Lord"), as a fledgling solo artist ("After Midnight," "Let It Rain"), in Derek and the Dominos ("Layla," "Bell Bottom Blues"), and through the rest of the '70s ("I Shot the Sheriff," "Cocaine," "Wonderful Tonight," "Promises") to his '81 hit "I Can't Stand It" are well documented by this collection's 19 cuts. The down side is that the CD also vividly illustrates how insubstantial Clapton's work turned in the mid-'70s. But that won't be a problem for fans seeking hits. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars Must have.   October 31, 2008
$10 for this CD is a steal. Buy a copy for everyone in your family and teach them what real music is.

4 out of 5 stars Where is LAY DOWN SALLY......WHERE ?????WHERE???   October 8, 2008
Really , someone tell the RECORD LABEL or CLAPTON...."to add this song at the bottom of this track list in a remaster or re-print". Man !! This is like BABE RUTH without a baseball-bat. YEP !! Clapton left off his HOME-RUN ( the song ), off this album. That just doesn't score very many points. ONLY 4 STARS.

5 out of 5 stars The cream of the cream!   July 26, 2008

To talk about Eric Clapton is like to refer us to one of these untiring and innovative musicians, who are like true hunters in what concerns to fertile creativeness, rhythmic sense and portentous expressiveness.

Since the first time one listens (at least this was my case) one participates with him, because his music involves, delights and hovers the hall of your home. In Clapton, the guitar proudly exhibits, one of its most genuine performers. He has gained ground every time he decides to release an album, because one realizes that behind every single theme, there` s a visible sense of communicate experiences and livings. He has achieved this hard pinnacle due its absolute and total conviction about he is doing. Moreover, there` s a febrile passion that always has stamped his presence, and you may verify since those the times of "Cream" until his most recent album. His collaboration with every musical partner, nourished and inspired one to another, and this was a decisive step throughout his consolidation as music and composer. Steve Winwood, with Blind faith, John Mayall, B.B. King as well as his continuous worriment to be aware with the sound of every generation he has lived has gained him an enviable honour place among the cream of the Blues and Rock music, because he has never denied he before nothing is a blues performer. His well self-styled artistry and inimitable identity are the essential factors who have allowed him to be far beyond we are used to listen here and there, a renowned and fashionable artist. His creative genius has become him a crack-jack artist.

So after all these considerations without regarding your ages, you should acquire this album, because it's part of a transcendental and golden chapter of the R&B music.

5 out of 5 stars the name says it all   June 23, 2008
indeed the name says it all,if your only going to buy one clapton cd this is it. it spans his career from 67-81 his best years in my opinon (being to weak before and too soft after)and this includes all his best known tracks from cream, blind faith, the dominoes and his solo career, and they are great tracks all.so for any clapton or classic rock fan this is an essential.

4 out of 5 stars Clapton 101   January 10, 2008

This could be called Essential Clapton, as it covers his progress from ex-Yardbird to plain old Clapton, no additions needed (though he always chooses top-notch people to travel with); the one album I missed being represented, of all the terrific ones taken from here, was his great "From The Cradle", an examination of the blues that no Clapton fan should miss. Overall, "The Cream of Clapton" is a faithful survey of all his greats; 'White Room' and 'Sunshine Of Your Love' from the days of Cream; 'Blues Power and 'Let it Rain' from the self-titled Eric Clapton album, which is the album that drew me into his orbit - I still have the vinyl somewhere; the omnipresent 'Layla' and 'Bell Bottom Blues' from his Derek and the Dominos era (he was trying to keep a low pro with the name; small chance, after 'Layla'), and other great hits, 19 in all. He intentionally did not allow the inclusion of 'Tears In Heaven' which has become intensely private for him, and which I can understand; he also never plays it in concert anymore.

This is not an all-encompassing collection, but it certainly hits on many of his best moments. I picked it up on a whim and was not disappointed, other than missing the blues album already mentioned, and in retrospect, that album is one that should stand alone and not be fragmented.
