Amazon.com Product Description
The RioVolt SP65 portable CD player plays CDs, MP3 CDs, and features a built-in FM radio tuner for media-free listening. The SP65 includes a lighted LCD and provides electronic shock protection (ESP) to guard against skipping during playback--up to 40 seconds of ESP for audio CDs and 120 seconds for MP3 CDs.

Assembling collections on your CD burner gives you the option of storing up to an incredible 24 hours of WMA music on a single CD-R or CD-RW. You also get text display for ID3 title information, showing track and artist information while music plays on its large display.

Electronic shock protection keeps your music flowing smoothly during active use, and you'll likely see around 15 hours of playback time for MP3 files using only two AA batteries (supplied). Four equalization presets, folder navigation, 32-track programmable sequencing, repeat play, and shuffle play modes broaden your listening options.

When the player starts, it fills a memory buffer with track data. The CD stops spinning and the tracks continue to play from memory, which helps conserve battery life. When about 30 seconds of time remains in the buffer, the CD will again spin up and refill the buffer. During this time, if the RioVolt is jarred so that the buffer can't be filled--as when jogging, for instance--then the player may begin to skip. The buffer must be full in order to provide skip-free performance.

What's in the Box
CD player, earphones, two AA batteries, and a user's manual.

3 out of 5 stars good bang for your buck.., for a little while   April 28, 2005

i bought this because i was going overseas for 7 weeks and didn't want to lug all my CDs around. It was great, I made about 10 mp3 mixes, put them in a small wallet and enjoyed endless hours of music on planes, bus, dessert, etc. But that was just for about 3 months. First off, the player skips a lot. And I don't mean when I run with it it skips, i mean when i sleep with it it skips. When it's sitting on the floor while I'm drawing, it skips. (skips for no reason) does this for regular CDs and mp3 mixes. couldn't figure out how to program the radio. takes about a minute to start up and read an mp3 mix. i like the readout and the fact it has 2 headphone jacks (ones a lot louder) so i can share music w/a friend. it eats batteries like i eat chocolate (a lot and very quickly) i like how there are many different features, to repeat, shuffle etc. it's not very reliable though, many times it will randomly turn on or off even when i have the key lock thing locked. anyways it was good while it lasted. i currently have an mp3 player (ipod style but not that cultish) in the mail for me and i'm hoping that works better. i would recommend those if you can afford them. not only are they higher quality sound but also you can ditch your cds (or hide them under your bed) so they're a major space saver. either way though, enjoy what you end up with!

I don't know why anyone would complain about this product. I got it for $30 and it works great. It DOES NOT play WMA for those of you wondering, but I have a program that converts WMA to MP3, so that's no problem for me. It was a little confusing figuring out how to program the FM radio, but I figured it out myself in about 5 minutes. If you're really having trouble you can look online at www.sonicblue.com/support. It gives you all the help you'll need. I'm not sure of how the battery life is other than what the product claims, no problems there. I've already got it hooked up in my car too, and it works in there. The picture makes it appear as if there really are only a few buttons, but the large circle has play/pause/on, forward, back, stop/off buttons that are all multifuncional as well as a special button that enables different play modes as well as the radio. It's not very complicated. So far I love this thing. Get one if they're still only $30

4 out of 5 stars Good for the price   July 19, 2004

I just got this player and found it very easy to use (without even referring to the handbook). It's great being able to play one CD full of about 14 albums in MP3 format. I've not tried other formats yet. The design is very nice and has all the main basic functions. It does seem to last a long time on 2 AA batteries (longer than an ipod ;-)

The sound is OK for the price but I found that it does skip a bit after some time if on the move (unless you hold it carefully). For my use though (listening whilst travelling on the bus and train) I find it just right and the added FM radio is excellent for listening to BBC World service.

I've just sent off for another one for my daughter who is 9 years old and loves the look of it.

3 out of 5 stars WMA... does the SP65 play them or not?   July 7, 2004
The description of the unit's features up top says that it is an MP3/CD player only. The secondary 'in-depth' description says that the unit plays WMA's??? I am confused.

Does THIS specific unit play WMA's too or is it just MP3/CD?

If this particular unit does NOT play WMA's then it would be nice if you would tell us so we aren't being mislead.

1 out of 5 stars difficult to program, no access to manual   January 13, 2004

Sp65 is difficult to program. Detailed instructions are not included with purchased item, and send you to a web page that is unavailable (www.sonicblue.com/support). I think this is a piece of junk!
