Amazon.com Product Description Measuring just under an inch thick and weighing less than half a pound, the Panasonic SL-SX480W personal CD player is a great choice whether you're working out at the gym, commuting on the train, or listening at home in the bedroom. The player boasts a sleek, round housing with an attractive white cover that snaps down securely during playback. More significantly, the unit plays more than just prerecorded CDs, with compatibility for both CD-R/RW discs and compressed MP3 files burned onto a CD-R/RW. The expanded playback options give users access to far more of their digital music library each time they leave the house. Active users will also appreciate the anti-skip system and its related backup memory function (45 seconds for CDs and 100 seconds for MP3s), which combine to ensure a disruption-free listening experience while jogging or driving. At the core of the SL-SX480W's audio performance is Panasonic's advanced D.sound technology, which comprises four main components: a digital amplifier that reduces distortion for a clearer overall sound; the bass-enhancing facility of the S-XBS super bass boost and the digital audio gain control; and an MP3 remastering function that restores much of the lost fidelity of compressed MP3 audio files. The system also includes four equalizer settings to further enhance the audio experience. And Panasonic wasn't content to stop there. The company also added a function called H.Bass, which reproduces the series of harmonic bass components that most headphones and compact speakers can't touch. As a result, the listener will enjoy the sensation of fuller bass through the SL-SX480W even when listening over a set of compact ear buds. Also impressive is the array of playback functions--including 20-track programming, repeat play (one and all tracks), and random play--and the CD player's extra-long playback times, which extend up to 75 hours for MP3s and 33 hours for CDs. The CD player, which measures 5.43 inches in diameter, runs on a pair of AA alkaline batteries and comes with Panasonic's D.sound stereo headphones. The unit also carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor. What's in the Box CD player, headphones, user's manual.
Product Description Advanced D.sound technology is comprised of four components that work together to elevate your audio experience to the next level. A Digital Amplifier helps reduce distortion and also helps you achieve crystal-clear sound - even at higher volume levels. The S-XBS and Digital Audio Gain Control help to improve bass response at higher volume levels and MP3 Re-Master technology allows the listener to receive outstanding sound quality from compressed music files, such as MP3 and WMA.Without H.Bass, headphones and compact speakers cannot reproduce some of the bass sound components that are included in music. H.Bass technology reproduces the harmonic series of bass components. This gives the listener the sensation of a fuller bass sound that cannot actually be reproduced with headphones and compact speakers.SL-SX480 portable CD player is designed to reduce or eliminate CD skipping during most active uses. It even has a backup memory feature that helps provide further assurance of a skip-free listening experience.MP3 is the most popular and widely used digital audio compression format available today. Since MP3 files are so small, you can burn a library of music onto CD-R/RWs from a compatible computer and play them back on your portable CD player.mall, you can burn a library of music onto CD-R/RWs2 from a compatible computer and play them back on your portable CD player.

Do You Like Disappointment? December 14, 2007 Disappointment is exactly what I received with this Portable CD Player. After only a couple months of play (1-2 times a day)it began clicking off at various points of the CD. Sometimes I could get it going again and other times I could not.
I did read the instructions, I did do exactly what they said, several times, but to no avail. I ended up throwing it away and buying another brand. I haven't received it yet, but when I do, I'll let you know how that one works.

Almost Right November 22, 2007 The ONLY problem is the labels are not east to read....I labeled them on top with magic marker.
CD player that plays MP3 cd's November 21, 2007 I have had one of these for a year now and have found it very reliable. I wish it did have larger buttons and a way to use external power.
But it plays a long time on the batteries which are secure inside the player. I have found it quite sturdy with good anti skip capabilities.
I happen to LIKE the headphones that come with it, and do not want ear buds or other fancy devices.
I recommend it for the price. I stick to tried and true brand names, and this is one I have always been satisfied with.
Too light for a doorstop November 8, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
If I had written this review one month ago the Panasonic SL-SX480W player would have received four stars. Today it gets one.
As many other reviewers have pointed out, there are a few drawbacks with this unit:
1) Buttons are tiny and almost impossible to read. 2) Battery tray is in a bad place -- too close to the lid hinges. 3) No line-out plug and can't play from AC wall socket (batteries only). 4) Cannot fast forward through MP3s (very inconvenient for audio books).
On the plus side, the headphones are much better than usual for a portable CD player -- although I generally listen on my high-quality Grado headphones. The audio is excellent, and battery life is decent (I can play about 20 CDs before a battery change is needed).
The reason for my one-star review is that the player died last week. The player's drive unit made a loud, rasping noise as the disc began to spin. After a few days the player failed completely and either shows a 'no disc' warning on the display, or will play about one minute and stop.
Most of my listening on this Panasonic player has been in the house. Once every two or three weeks during the summer I would use it when out mowing the lawn -- always safely deposited in a carrying case and plastic bag to protect it from dust. I have never dropped the player or mistreated it in any way. The unit was purchased in February and played an average of two discs per day.
So, despite only moderate use and tender loving care, the Panasonic 480 lasted just nine months before it self-destructed. I've had cheaper players that lasted years before they gave up the ghost. I have to conclude that the quality control for this product is non-existent.
Since the unit only weighs a few ounces, it can't even be used as the proverbial door-stop, and it's to thick for a coaster. If the build quality had been even half as good as the sound quality, this would have been a fine purchase. Obviously that was not the case. Caveat emptor.
A Few (So Far) Unmentioned Issues: October 21, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
The complaints about the battery location: I dropped a portable CD unit in the past that had its battery compartment on the outside and ruined it because the frail battery hinge and catch broke.
There is no provision for an external AC or car power adaptor. And I found battery life somewhat less than on the many Sony units I have owned. If you listen a lot where an external power source is convient, you may end up losing the money you saved on the otherwise good valued player.
For "free" headphones, I actually found these better than the bundled headsets I've gotten with the many of these little players I've gone through, and far superior to any ear buds I've tried. The five foot cord is both longer and stronger than the little strings that tie most cheap headphones. You'll need to use the first "XBS" bass boost setting on the player. They sound best if moved slightly forward from the natural feeling spot centered on the ears. But for serious listening, get a pair of Grado T60s or Sennheiser PX100s.
The display will not show remaining time on the CD, a feature I've grown accustomed to on my Sony units.
While the unit does not LOOK durable, I've subjected mine to a lot of bumps, drops, and other gardening indignities with no failure so far. I have had 4 Sony units that all looked a lot more durable, but failed after about 2 years of heavy use. Haven't had mine that long, but so far so good.
If you like to fiddle with the controls after starting a CD, this is not the unit for you. Nine identical tiny buttons on the side, identified only by embossed lettering on the case, are difficult to operate without staring closely (with good lighting) at the case. The display is inconveniently located on the front; tiny, dim, and hard to read.
Sound quality seemed decent to me, but not up to that on my new Sony DNF430. I went back to a Sony because its top display, easier to use controls, and its remote control unit makes it a far better car unit.
All that said, this player is a very good value due to its decent sound, the servicable headphones keeps you from having to buy those extra, and when you're ready for better sound a headphone upgrade will be rewarded.
