4 out of 5 stars Compact & Easy   November 25, 2008
FM Modulators as a rule do not provide as clear reception as a direct line. However, if your current vehicle doesn't provide that option, you don't want a bunch of wires in your way, or you find yourself switching vehicles quite a bit, this is the perfect solution for you!

The iTrip is tiny, doesn't need wires (but they are included just in case you want to simultaneously charge your iPod while you're using it), and provides almost perfect sound. The only caveat to this is that you need to find the best station to broadcast through, but that isn't difficult to do. The iTrip also remembers the last station used, so if you find a good one, make it a preset and you'll be all set.

The only warning I will give is that when you first purchase your iTrip, it may drain the battery from your iPod more rapidly than should be expected, so make sure to bring the extra charging cables with you just in case. This is a symptom that wears off, so you won't have to worry about it too long.

2 out of 5 stars Too underpowered for use   October 7, 2008
The previous model of regular iTrip (the 2006 dock connector model) was really good, and could punch through a crowded dial like Houston's. Well, I needed a new one (lost the old one...) and picked up the 2008 model as available.

It's weak.

Even holding it a couple of inches from an antenna, this model is just staticky at best and doesn't come through at all at the worst.
Evidently, the FCC started cracking down on personal FM transmitters that are overpowered right out of the box, and the reason that the previous model was so effective was that, well... it was illegal. Oops.
But DARN, it was good.

Honestly, if you can find one, get the previous dock connector model.

2 out of 5 stars Check your local frequencies   August 21, 2008
This is the third (and worst) iTrip I've owned. The signal strength is not high enough to overcome the residual broadcast on ANY frequency in my area (Washington DC). My car has an in-glass antenna that picks up fainter signals and cannot be 'retracted' to provide less performance.

I've ordered another iTrip Auto (my last one was broken by an iPod thief) because I just can't listen to any more static, intermittent dj banter and other interference. I thought I would like the portability (not tethered to the car) of this unit and I'm sure it performs better in more isolated locations, but in an urban environment it just doesn't cut it.

1 out of 5 stars Way too weak a signal!   August 11, 2008

I bought this product thinking that it would be a great replacement for my old Belkin iTrip, which only allowed you to change radio stations when hooked up to a computer. Boy was I wrong. The signal from this thing is so weak that when you're less than three feet from the car antenna, you can still hearing static while songs are playing. Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars Best iTrip Yet.   July 15, 2008

In the past five or so years, I've owned two iTrips. This one is my third. All three performed wonderfully, and withstood heat and humidity like champions. Each one has wonderful reception right out of the box, but after about 2-3 years, begins to fade in and out of tuning. As of yet, this one has had no problems and works wonderfully well. I only wish the backlight was as strong as the previous models.
