Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
D-Link, the worldwide leader in innovative home and business networking, sets a new standard for broadband router performance with the Express EtherNetwork DI-704P. The DI-704P is an Ethernet Broadband Router with a built-in 4-port switch. It also features a parallel port to share a printer on the home or office network and includes a print server application for Windows. As many as four computers can be connected to the router's integrated switch, using its four 10/100Mbps AutoMDIX Ethernet ports. The DI-704P is ideal if you're creating your first home or small business network, or if you're a more advanced user looking for additional management settings. The DI-704P includes a new, easy-to-use D-Link web-based graphical user interface (GUI) to configure the router. To keep prevent unwanted Internet intruders from accessing your private network, the DI-704P also serves as a feature-rich firewall. So, whether you're a college student who wants to network with friends and roommates, an executive working at home or in a small office, or a concerned parent who just wants to have more control over how your children access the Internet, then the D-Link Express EtherNetwork DI-704P is the networking solution for you, even if you don't know anything about networking.

5 out of 5 stars Great for sharing connections on a fast network!   November 2, 2008

I'm a programmer and have used networking equipment in my home for years. This product is super simple to use; you just plug in your broadband into the "WAN" socket (standard Ethernet connection from a CAT-5). A WAN indicator light will tell you when your internet connection is working. Then you can plug up to four other items into it.

My use for it was to split my internet to my TiVo and to my wireless port. But when I was working from home, or using my laptop to watch internet videos, or copying video from my laptop to my desktop computer (also on the network), I could plug a network cable from my laptop into one of the free ports and get blazing network connectivity.

I never used the network printer function, just because I didn't want my printer near where my internet hookup came into my house.

I recommend it for any situation where you want rock-steady and fast internet or home network connectivity.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad but I can not recommend it.   November 19, 2005

I owned this item before. It used to work correctly and at some point started crashing every day. When I recover it the next day it will crash again. Eventually it stopped working one day and ended up in the dumpster. That prompted me to move to the DI-704UP. I don't recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Revision A = Reliable, Revision C = Awful   August 10, 2005

I'm on my third D-Link 704P. Why did I come back for a third beating? Great question! The first 704P I had -- revision A (brown case) -- was incredibly reliable, was one of the very few routers with a parellel port print server, and had much higher than average throughput. It lasted me 4 years of solid use. So when it died, I had no problems replacing it with another 704P, this time revision C (silver case). After 1 month of use, it stopped working. Assuming I had a lemon, I replaced the replacement. Here I am another month later with a non-working router again. I can only conclude that the newer models aren't nearly as reliable as the old. Time to drop my trusty printer with the parallel port, and move on to a different brand of router. *sniff*

1 out of 5 stars Great router when it is working   February 3, 2004

There are at least three versions of this router with the print server. Mine is DI-704P revision B

This is a great print server "when" it is working. Unfortunately, it gets hot and unexpectantly quits working. I live in Calgary, Alberta and the temperature has been bitterly cold during the last two weeks. I keep the house temperature around 65 deg F in the winter and the router is well ventilated.

To get it working again, I have to unplug it and let it cool down. Then I have to reset the router. I have two other DLink Routers, a DI-604 and a DI-624. The first time that this happened, after reading the manual, I assumed that the router is reset using the same proceedure as my DI-624.

After trying many times, I contacted DLink and found out that I was not using the correct proceedure. So, I went back to my manual to see if I had misread the instructions. I discovered that something got lost in the translation from Chinese to English.

I have had to unplug (to cool) and reset the router about four times in the last two weeks and have decided to give up and replace it with the DI-604 that I had previously used. This router was purchased in September or October, 2003 and should still be under warranty. I will wait to see what DLink will do.

The DI-704P router runs considerably hotter than my other two routers. The high temperature has been reported by others on DLinks website. My experience seems similar to what others have reported.

1 out of 5 stars Won't Keep Working   October 10, 2003

I've had this router for about a year now. I remember it being difficult to configure, but for the most part it has worked okay until recently.

Now the router stops working constantly. I have to reboot it by unplugging it, waiting, and plugging it back in. Once I go through this routine, it's good for another few hours of use.

Obviously this is unacceptable. I'm looking for a replacement but its hard to find something with the a print server, which I really need.
