Purchased July 2008 - Failed Nov 2008 November 26, 2008 Sadly I must write a one star review on this product. I've been a Seagate Customer for years, but not happy with this drive.
Initially I purchsed it for installation in my DVR - 24/7 usage. At first it seemed okay, but after a month or so, I noticed some slow downs & hiccups on the DVR. Finally in Mid November my DVR was behaving like it was possessed; culminating in me waking up one morning to the DVR rebooting endlessly trying to repair itself, finally ending in what's known as the green screen of death.
A surface scan & SMART error code checking; the drive was failing in a massive way, more than 30% of the surface was testing as failed. I can probably format it and get more life out of it; but I have no faith in it. I purchased Seagate ST31000340AS 1TB Barracuda Sata 7200 Rpm 32MB Cache 8.5MS Hard Drive instead. I also noticed that my DVR is performing faster than it ever did with this drive; so something could have been wrong from the outset.
Since I'm not within the 30 day return period and not messing with the manufacturer return or RMA process hassle, I've eaten the cost of this drive.
It may have been the 24/7 environment, but you'd think with the higher priced version of this drive it would perform well -- it didn't.
Run from this company and this drive !! November 7, 2008 Just a little over 3 weeks old and it died. Seagate's poor overseas tech support, of no help, they offer to send a `refurbished' drive (a used one) to replace what I purchased NEW. Called Seagate Corporate, no help, selecting numbers to more automated script recorded voices. No option to get to a real person or a operator. Good bye Seagate, poor service, poor drive. Save your money. Run from this company.
Work wonderfully! September 8, 2008 I bought 2 of these drives for my Drobo, and they work wonderfully! Plenty of space, quick, quiet, incredibly reliable - what more can you ask for in a hard drive?
Who needs 1Tb of storage anyway? September 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Is it even possible for a single human being to accumulate 1TB of digital stuff worth storing? Honestly, I'm not really sure what to do with this much hard-drive. I'll just have to start hording pornography and downloading pirated movies.
1TB is a huge capacity. Even our small office has yet to fill more than 250GB of our 1TB Server storage. Still, I've found its easier to buy more disk space than I'll need anytime soon and consolidating all my stuff on one drive. It's a little riskier, that's true, but if you have data you don't want to lose then you should be making backups anyway.
BTW, this is a great price for the product. The local BB had the 16mb cache version for $180.00, and I was about to grab it but I checked on Amazon first and found the 32mb cache for just a few dollars more. Sweet deal.
Seagate has a reputation as a reliable brand for storage drives, and I find they tend to run better than Maxtor and other "bargain" brands. That doesn't mean they won't crash on you, but it might improve your chances of getting a sturdy product.
If you're worried about shipping, just remember that these drives don't show up in your local retail outlet's receiving bay nestled on soft pillows held aloft by angels. The Seagate packaging is tight, and the Amazon box is the usual deal with the plastic air packets. Good enough.
Make sure you actually have a SATA connection. This is different from the usual 19-pin deal. Most new computers will use SATA, but if you're not sure what you've got then check it out before you toss this in the cart.
Big Storage August 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After the failure of my external backup drive that I had owned for less than a year and losing all of my documents and pictures etc, I was on the market for a more secure storage solution. Started reading up on RAID 1 and found a nice enclosure http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012R3DMM here on Amazon that would do the trick. Started looking for 1TB drives to accompany it since I needed two. (RAID ain't cheap but the security of your precious data makes it worth it)Looked at some others but ordered this Seagate drive after seeing that they had a 5 year warranty. So if one drive goes down, my data is secure and I can just go through the RMA procedure and my array is back to normal.(If you are using just a single drive no matter what brand it is always advisable to BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT DATA to avoid costly data recovery services since no warranty will cover these costs) It's the retail kit so you get the hard drive, an installation guide, a cd including the disc wizard software which allows you to clone your current hard drive a diagnostic program and info on the drive as well as registration and data recovery, a SATA data cable and a SATA to Molex power adapter and 4 mounting screws. I paid extra for the retail kit because of the uncertainty of packaging for OEM Hard Drives. (which usually contain nothing but the drive in an anti-static bag) Packaging was secure as the drive is in a sealed anti-static bag secured on the top and bottom by two essentially plastic covers that seem to be able to protect the drive from squeezing from any side. I would have preferred foam protection. Popped it into the enclosure and connected it to my pc to begin the format(it comes unformatted). I estimate the format to take between 3-4 hours(hey it's a huge drive) and at the end you get a 931GB drive(sorry to disappoint those expecting 1000GB). Seems to be working good so far.Highly recommended!
