Mac compatible - both functionally and aesthetically November 30, 2008

Finally an external drive that can hold it's own alongside a Mac, I'm surprised this wasn't designed by Apple! It has a very sleek, minimalistic design with a 'piano gloss' finish that fits well either on your desk or as part of your home theater.
Positive aspects:
+ Sleek design
+ Price per GB
+ Mac compatible!
+ Fanless: less noise and no moving parts to fail
+ 2 year warranty: versus 1 year for Western Digital and other generic manufacturers
Neutral aspects:
- Auto power off: Drive does not seem to auto power-off when not being accessed but still connected via USB. Newer drives from Seagate automatically power off the internal disk while still staying connected.
- Blue light: Although it looks cool, would like to have the option to turn off the blue activity/power indicator, it can be annoying if you're playing a movie off the disk and the drive is part of your home-theater setup.
Overall, still highly recommended especially considering the current price (approx 150 dollars for the 1TB version) makes it very competitive with other external drive options. Might as well go with a brand name one with a longer warranty!

this is perfection-if you are looking for a external hard drive with lots of space this is the one! it's portable and perfectly suited for all of me and my families' needs.

It is a really a thing of beauty. Simple looking and elegant. Nice blue light underneath. These were might first impressions.
I plugged it into my computer, and the space under My Computer only said 9.99 MB!!! I couldn't believe that Lacie would send out a TB hard drive with 1/100,000 the space. I called Lacie support, waited on the phone for a while, and an agent told me I needed to right click My Computer>> Manage. Then there is option to manage disk drives. My computer recognized there was 931 GB unallocated. So I just needed to delete the only volume there of 10 MB, and then create a new larger volume.
In the end, it works, thanks to the good support from Lacie. It's quiet and doesn't overheat. I think my case was an aberration, but it could happen to more people.

I have a large iTunes collection. 20K+ songs, that I ripped 90% of them as mp3s at 320kbps, some iTunes down loads and the rest at Apple LossLess, and some podcasts, TV Shows, and Movie trailers. So I need the extra room. I am using the eSata connection and the access time is awesome compared to other drives I have used (USB, Ethernet(NAS) type drives). My only complaint about this drive is that it doesn't auto shut down when I bring down my computer - I wish it were an option. Just an on off switch. The light isn't as annoying as a WD drive at lighting my room up at night either.
