3 out of 5 stars Average product, same as all others hardware wise (always use third party backup software, not what comes with the unit).   November 29, 2008
From experience using other network storage devices, all you need to focus on the hardware part is if it can accomplish multiple connections and you can share with friends and family securely thru the internet. Plus create secure folders on it (if you're a parent or share this drive with others on the same network and you don't want just anyone accessing this randomly).
For all network storage devices, the software that comes with it, usually is "try-then-buy" (shareware), its too complicated or not sophisticated enough for "your ideal backup tasks" (lets face it, everyone has different needs for a device like this, no generic software will accomplish them all) or software pretty much sucks (talking about software that comes with the unit here).
That all said, before purchasing, look on-line for free software that you like for backup purposes and make sure the software can do what you need. Then, go out and get this unit or another of the capacity you need. This unit, from all reviews, is great and you can't beat the 5yr warranty (last I checked when I wrote this review).
For Mac users, don't go solely on the mac user review posted before, thou I have to agree, even on a PC it will take a few seconds/minutes for the software to automatically detect. Once you detect it, change it to a physical IP address by going into the drive using your browser (Safari or any other you use). From that point forward, you shouldn't have any issue using third party software for backups. Good luck to all.

P.S. Everyone's experience is different, some may get a "lemon", some may get the best. "Always test what you purchase, as-soon-as you receive it."

4 out of 5 stars Great Product.   October 14, 2008
I'm a bit obsessive compulsive about how things look on my desk. This is a quirky looking device, but I must say that it holds its own against a sea of my other goodies and gadgets. Its sleek black finish and interesting angular lines make up for the hefty/blocky size.

The quality of the product does not disappoint. File transfers are speedy, and I'm able to run videos and music off my network with no problems at all. A neat feature I found very useful is that you can plug in your usb printer to enable network printing.

The unit is relatively cheap in terms of what you're getting: A network drive that is 1tb, with print sharing, web access sharing, not to mention the security you get with Maxtor products. I feel much safer and more secure when using this product which replaced an older no-name network storage server. When buying a Nas, the trick is to buy one that is pretty nice that isn't that cheap. You never want to go super cheap when buying this category of product. This is very good value for your money so that's why I got this one.

One negative thing about this is that I heard it doesn't work with Time Machine on Mac. I have not tried this feature, but for mac users, you might want to look into this. Other than that, I give it a 5. We'll take one star away for the lack of compatibility with Time Machine. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about this. I'll be happy to change my score.
Overall: 4.

3 out of 5 stars web access is a disappointment for macs   September 26, 2008
I've always wanted an external hard drive that I can connect via internet so I can grab files globally. This is the major reason why I chose this hard drive; however it led to nothing but a disappointment. I got this specific hard drive because it said it's compatible with macs and the description made it seem as if it is very simple to use.

The set up was very simple - just straight plug in to the router and pop the disk into the computer and follow the instructions. Setting up the hard drive for network use is very simple and quick, but as I was trying to set up the global access part - the hard drive could not configure with my network. The rendering icon kept spinning after half hour, but it was not connecting. Even after I restarted it and tried it a few more times the result was the same - connection to network failed.

Although this hard drive failed in web access for macs, but there are some other great usages this hard drive offers -
The transferring speed is pretty fast so I can drag and drop movies into the network and grab it from another room - hook it up to an LCD and it's ready to go! I can also share music and photos via network and to share with friends via net (if they have a pc that is).

another great thing is this drive has a USB plug so I can hook up my printer n print via network. another feature that's useful is they have a function to schedule backups of your files - just need to plug additional external harddrive to this net work hard drive and you'll have more space to use for backing up!

so if anyone of you hope to purchase this item to use as a web access harddrive - make sure you have a pc to access their site to grab and upload files.

4 out of 5 stars A Work in Progress   September 17, 2008
Nice hardware and I love the size 1TB, however getting the software setup so multiple computers can access the drive is proving challenging.

The best Maxtor Support has done so far is to say "It must be a firewall problem..." Ok, so what's next then?

When everything is eventually set up - and I'm sure it will be, I think that this will be a great little NAS for the home.

5 out of 5 stars Good after I changed it   August 30, 2008
It's a good product and it's doing what I expect to. I had to change it because the first one didn't work at all, but Seagate change it for no cost. The one that I have installed right now is working just good.
