People en Español The 22-year-old daughter of cinephile Fernando Sarinanawho composed songs for film and also cast his little girl in some of his own projectspresents one of the most promising Latin Music albums of the year. Her voice may be reminiscent of Natalia Lafourcade, but her musical style is more intense and dramatic, with more of a jazzy influence ("Reforma"), and reminiscent of Regina Spektor ("La Tina," "Vidas paralelas"). --Ernesto Sanchez (People en Espanol )
Amazon.com After a lengthy career in film and television, the Mexican actress and singer, Ximena Sarinana, finally releases her first studio album titled Mediocre. This young lady has art coursing through her veins, with a famous Mexican movie director for a father (Fernando Sarinana). Furthermore, her aunts, Angelica Rivera and Veronica Castro, are both actresses, and her uncle Jose Alberto Castro is a producer. The album consists of 12 tracks that fuse rhythms such as jazz, pop, rock and funk. Produced by Tweety Gonzalez (Soda Stereo), Juan Campodonico (Bajo Fondo, Jorge Drexler), and Mood-Fu, Mediocre is an honest album that lacks pretention and makes evident Ximena's incredible musical talent. The first single, "Vidas Paralelas," quickly reached top popularity within just a few weeks of hitting radio in Mexico. The video for this single was recorded in Iceland, under the direction of Pablo Davila (Motel, Los Dynamite). Nice surprise, recommended by Rolling Stone October 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I discovered this artist in a recent issue of Rolling Stone. And this is a good album altogether.
The name of the cd is an auto review of itself October 7, 2008 1 out of 10 found this review helpful
If you want to hear a girl who considers herself as the latin Alanis Morissette meets Bjork but who isn't even near to that, who looks as tomboyish as Miley Cyrus, and who sings with such a drowsy voice as Julieta Venegas does, this cd is the perfect option to waste your money. Each track stays on the try of being an alternative deep song with a meaning, but up there , you can't ask her more
Latin Nora Jones October 5, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought this CD as a recommendation for those who liked Lila Downs. There is no comparison to Lila Downs's music. As I listened to each song I kept asking myself "who's music is this, I've heard this before?" Then I realized it was Nora Jones. If you really like Nora Jones, you may like this (my wife and daughter do), but if you like Lila Downs it's probably not your cup of hot chocolate.
She sounded great on NPR this Saturday morning. October 4, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I only caught a few minutes of her segment on NPR radio, but in the couple minutes I heard I knew Ximena had a special voice. When someone can knock you over singing just one verse a capella you know its great.
I'm looking forward to the CD.
Update: CD is good. But to really appreciate Xime you need to watch her sing live. Just search, you'll appreciate her that much more after seeing her sing live.
