Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Philips DVP5140 Progressive Scan DVD Player, can play CD-R/W, DivX, DVD, DVD+R/W, DVD-R/W DVD-Video, MP3, MPEG4, Picture CDs, VCD, and SVCD. That's right, all of this in one small package for an incredibly reasonable price. All while delivering quality picture and audio performance. Component video output lets you connect this DVD player to your high-end home television set to optimize viewing quality.

From the Manufacturer
192KHz sampling enables you to have an accurate representation of the original sound curves. Together with a 24-bit resolution, more information is captured from the original analogue sound wave form, giving a much richer audio reproduction.

Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and listening pleasure.

12-bit Video DAC is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.

The attractive enclosure has a very low profile.

DivX Ultra combines DivX playback with great features like integrated subtitles, multiple audio languages, multiple tracks and menus into one convenient file format.

Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and viewing pleasure.

Picture CD is a CD-R or CD-RW disc on which you can store your MP3 and digital pictures. When inserting a Picture CD in the DVD player, a screen menu will pop up, showing your JPEG's and/or MP3 files on the disc. Just select the music and pictures files you wish to enjoy and press play or OK. You can watch your pictures on TV with your music playing simultaneously.

Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

Other standard features include:
  • 192kHz/24-bit audio DAC delivers high-quality audio.
  • 12-bit/ 108Mhz video DAC for sharp image with natural colors.
  • Ultra-slim design.

4 out of 5 stars Great buy if you're desperate for overseas dvds   December 2, 2008
I just received the player today. The remote is crappy, as so many others have indicated, so it took me about 3 tries to get it coded region free as one of the reviewers has previously set forth. I put in my Region 3 dvd of L'Arc~en~Ciel Chronicles from Japan, and I'm now jumping for absolute joy! The picture is clear and looks like HD on my non-HDtv. It's a great buy. I just wish that I had waited to purchase. It has gone down a few bucks since my purchase on Friday.

4 out of 5 stars DVD Player   December 1, 2008
For the price, this DVD player is compact and produces a good quality picture and sound.

4 out of 5 stars Good purchase   November 24, 2008
This DVD player is as described. Plays everything, but is very slow to response and with a lousy remote control. But I knew it in advance from other people's reviews, so I don't complain. I think it is a very good purchase for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome DVD player!   November 23, 2008
We just got this to replace our Toshiba DVD player that died. It is awesome!! It plays DIVX movies and Windows Media Players and it took 2 seconds to get it to play any region DVDs. Fantastic price for all these features. Plus it looks cool!

3 out of 5 stars Works as advertised; but for 18 months only!   November 22, 2008
This product worked as advertised for about 18 months. I was able to easily convert the unit to a multizone with a very easy sequence of numbers on the remote; and was then able to play European discs. Also, this unit plays Divx movies beautifully, very practical when downloading movies (commercial, copyright free or amateur movies available on the web in Divx or Xvid formats).

However after 18 months, I have to report that the unit has become very capricious and rejects most of my home copied DVD (I back up commercial movies - such as the Disney Treasure series - because I do not want the kids ruining the expensive original ones). At first I thought that I was making mistakes in my back-up routines, and/or that I had bought bad media. So I threw out good discs, one after the other; I also spent (more than the value of the DVD player itself!) in the search for the elusive perfect blank DVD (hint: try Verbatim discs, they still are the best).

However on a whim, I decided to test my back-up discs elsewhere and they played beautifully on cheapo units.

So after 18 months, basically the multiformat, "plays anything you can throw at it" claim that Philips makes in their marketing for this line of DVD players, has become moot at best. Searching the web has confirmed to me that I am not the only one to experience these malfunctions.

The only redeeming three features are that (1) downloaded movies still play when burned on decent quality discs (my problems are related to backed-up discs that keep all MPEG2 contents and menus of the original DVDs, not downloaded movies in MPEG4 formats); that (2) progressive scan gives beautiful results and (3) purchase price is very low, making the problems less heartbreaking.
