Great functioning set May 14, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This product was used for skiing/snoboarding mountains in the US and had very good sign and contact with a mates similar items. the product looks are lacking, but the function is great and NOAA is great for early morning weather updates - much better than surfing on a PDA.

It is a good product, works fine in amusement parks, skying areas, sports stadiums, beaches, etc. Be aware that in city environments, the range is greatly reduced if you are indoors, inside car, subway, etc. the batteries last a lot. read the manuals, it is a little tricky to get used to the settings, but once is done, you have a powerful tool at your hands.
i like it May 13, 2007 this has great range. it is still a line-of-sight device but i should be able to get from costa mesa to catalina. that works for me!
So So May 13, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
With the limited use thus far I'm not thrilled with the range, using the GMS channel and on high power range from the 2nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel to another hotel taxi pickup one block away was weak at best. Back home in a residential neighborhood I tried for distance and it faded in and out only a mile away, I did not expect anywhere close to the 18 mile range under ideal conditions, but come on not even a mile.
Menu functions were easy to figure out, volume level need to be on high all the time and the belt clip was sturdy. While charging the batteries I expected the red light on the charger to go green or turn off when charged, that doesn't happen so there is no indicator when the battery is actually fully charged.
The radio was purchased to be used over a small inland lake for emergencies; hopefully I will have better luck over open water.
Disappointing range -vs- claim May 9, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I understand the physics behind radio range. I understand that claims are based on ideal conditions. However, with that said and a claimed range of 18 miles I had what I thought was a resonable expectation of 6-8 miles on an 18 mile radio. Apparently I was wrong. In an open urban park setting with a river down the middle, I was barely able to squeak out 2 miles. If the manufacturer is going to put a range of 18 miles on the package, they really ought to be able to deliver more than 10% of the claim under real world conditions. Overall, an excellent radio. Just disappointing range.
