Excellent, but with a couple of bugs January 2, 2007 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I have had my archos for about two months and I love it! It has great audio and video quality, an amazingly fast photo viewer, and a gorgeous design. The wifi is suprisingly fast for a little device, at least two times as fast as the PSP. However, Archos screwed up in a couple of places, mainly the prices. Pros and cons below. Pros: -Supports almost any file format out there. -Can stream from shared folder on wireless network. -The best portable video out there. -Great sound quality. -Optional videocorder dock works great. -Very colorful screen -Touch screen functionality blows ipod's clickwheel away -Wifi is cool, can download movies to device pretty quick -Sturdy metal body Cons: -When you add up all of the accessories, you are paying about 600 bucks if you want to record movies. -Have to buy plugins to play H.264 and MPEG-2. What a ripoff. -Moving through menus is VERY slow-processor is weak. -Equalizers don't change the sound that much. -Touch layer on screen brings down contrast, sharpness slightly. -No online podcast organizer like on the PSP. But these are small flaws that you barely notice when you are using the device. If you cannot decide between the iPod, Creative, or other competitors out there, go to cnet.com or dapreview.net. Have fun!
NO RAW format support any longer! December 29, 2006 3 out of 23 found this review helpful
The following review is only interesting for photographer:
The main reason for me to buy the product was to backup and store photos from my Canon to a harddisk and have a fast viewer for the photos. I shoot the photos in .jpg and .raw format.
I upgraded my Archos from the former AV 420 which did support .jpg and .raw backup from my Canon, but the photo viewer was incredible slow.
You don't find any Information about storing the .raw format on your Archos... I bought the product in the believe that an upgrade can't mean a step back in the development... which was an error... it really DONT support .raw ... I asked the helpdesk if they plan to support the .raw file in future... their answer was NO, they decided against raw format.
Nevertheless the picture viewer and the video things work fine, just for those who want to store .raw files as in the past, forget it...
Thanks Archos, so you make it easy for photographer to change the backup system to other companies like Creative.
Great Product but a bit slow when responding to touch screen and reading PDF files December 2, 2006 54 out of 59 found this review helpful
4.5 stars. Great unit and its positives have been well reviewed. However, there are two negatives that need to be corrected and which I believe can be corrected with a software update. One, when using the touch screen for input, the unit is a bit slow responding. When reading PDF files, the unit is painfully slow. Other reviewers have made the same observations. If Archos could speed up the response of the touch screen and (cache PDF pages) to speed up reading PDF files, it would solve two of the only negatives on this otherwise fine product.
Update: December 23, 2006 5 stars Latest firmware update (V1.6.05) corrected every criticism in my previous review above. Touch screen now responsive and reading PDF files very quick. Other manufacturers could take a real lesson from Archos. I have spent many years working with computers and their peripherals. Archos has shown themselves to be an extremely responsive company. My hat is off to them. Highly recommend the Archos 604 Wifi.
Another Awesome hit from Archos... November 25, 2006 7 out of 26 found this review helpful
I've long been an Archos fan. I have the 6GB Jukebox Recorder, AV420 and now planning on getting this. Its got a bevy of features and is an all around superb tool. I mean look at the capabilities - Wifi, browsing, photo, video ( many formats including DVD !! Just copy the decrypted vobs ), music
However, there are a few features that should've been there which I feel would've knocked this out of the park - 1. portable gaming. Yeah, its big these days 2. Phone capabilities ( this just will remain a wish till Apple comes and does it and everyone will copy ) 3. built-in camera for camera/video recording. C'mon every tiny cell phones have that now. 4. misc. PDA functions - calendar, appts, todo, notes, voice recorder
And it should've a larger HDD. like 200GB, 30GB just doesn't cut it these days. Hopefully, the expansion slot will make up for this. But all in all, this is an excellent product and I will get one for Christmas

Don't listen to the first reviewer of this product, that a shame to say so much false things ! Look at the different videos on the net, try it in a shop, it is the world's best pmp of it's category ! Really a must have !
