3 out of 5 stars Average or minimally good   November 2, 2008
0 out of 2 found this review helpful

First the good. I bought this for its recording feature. I don't care much for the other features, such as photos, MP3 player, etc. I have iPod for that, thank you. For the 2GB capacity, it is more than I care. And that's good. The simplicity of the recording is excellent, better than I expected. This tops the Sony voice recorder I have that I paid a lot more for than this Sansa. All you need to do when you're in a recording mode is two buttons. Press the Pause button and the recording is On. If you don't like what you recorded press the OK button and you're given a choice to save it or not. That simple. In terms of recorded voice quality, it's very crisp and clear. No static. I use this to record Bible texts. And I'm happy about it.

Now the bad. With that small screen, photo display is a joke. The battery charge indicator is hardly visible. You hardly see the dashes move indicating the battery is in a charge mode. Another thing, if you can remove the battery cover without destroying the unit, good luck. I still rate this as a worthy product for a simple, high quality voice recorder.

2 out of 5 stars it's ok but I don't recommend   November 2, 2008

Two things I don't like about this player:
- contrast is very bad, couldn't tell what line is selected.
- Couldn't get the playlist work.

The plus side is fm radio and recorder but if you don't need them then get a Sansa Clip instead.

2 out of 5 stars Customer Support Very Poor   October 31, 2008

We purchased this model for our daughter's 2007 Christmas gift. By summer 2008, it didn't work. She tried working with customer support online but found her emails and inquiries unanswered for weeks at a time. There was always a new suggestion but never a solution. Finally, after months of this run around, I called the company. I was left with the impression they were far more concerned with completing their data base regarding defects than providing the customer with a product that worked. Now, in November, I have a promise of a new product- with warranty. I had to push to get the new product and then had to push harder for a warranty in case the new product was also defective. My daughter(17 yrs)is an emerging consumer and has already written Sansa off her list, I know I have.

5 out of 5 stars Tough and capable, survived getting driven over   October 28, 2008

First and foremost, I'd like to point out that this device survived getting run over by my car. The screen cracked and is now partially unreadable, but everything still works just fine.

When I bought this I was looking for a cheap mp3 player that did nothing but play music. It does, quite well, and came with a whole bunch of other neat features. I had a few problems figuring out how to sync up and transfer my music (Prior to this I'd owned only Creative Nomad mp3 players, music transfer is a little different with them). Once you figure it out it's not bad. There's assorted video tutorials on the subject, which I ended up having to use.

Microphone and Radio tuner are pretty amazing considering how cheap and how little the device is. I use the microphone to record portions of class lectures and it works great (from within the first 3 or 4 rows, mind you). Radio tuner works as well as any other portable radio. I don't use the radio much, though, so I'm not sure how well it holds up under bridges and in large buildings etc.

The picture function, which seems to me something an mp3 player doesn't really need, works fine. I don't know what sorts of pictures you're supposed to look at on your mp3 player, but considering the screen resolution is 160 x 70 (or something like that, I don't remember exact size) pictures show up really clear. I guess you could fit a small two tiered flow chart, or maybe a basic time series graph. Or, if you're me, a picture of your girlfriend.

Bottom line, it's a great product, durable, and a steal. It's fallen down stairs, it's been run over by my car, and I've stepped on it a few times. It can stand up to a little punishment. The expansion slot is a great idea too, though I haven't had any need for it yet. Whenever this thing finally dies I will definitely be buying another.

2 out of 5 stars Very poor software - skip this one!   October 21, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

This MP3 player has pretty poor software. For the life of me, I couldn't get it to play tracks in the order that they appear on the album. With my MP3 collection, you could sort by file name, ID3 tag, or even date created and you'd end up with the proper order. But this unit played them alphabetically!

Text contrast on the screen is awful.
