Glass half full February 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Instead of looking at the glass half empty why not look on the brighter side? This player is still priced at or under the price of similar standard DVD players. It has an excellent upconverter and if you want to invest in the firesale of HD dvd's You can get some great looking movies for the same price or lower than their standard dvd counterparts. Check out the sale right here at Amazon for some incredible deals.
DO NOT BUY February 25, 2008 0 out of 9 found this review helpful
Do not buy any Toshiba HD DVD players. Press releases state that they are no longer in the HD DVD business. They have quit making them.
great picture and sound without region encoding February 1, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love region encoding.....not. Seriously I do love the fact that I get to rub it in the faces of ps3 owners that I can play "blu ray exclusive" movies that are on hd dvd from anywhere in the world. Fantastic four rise of the silver surfer by 20th century FOX looks awesome going thru this hd dvd player. Sure it takes about 40 seconds to boot up so I leave it on most of the time. I have had only one new disc lock up on me so I exchanged the disc and it has worked fine since. The upconverting of SD DVDs is surprisingly pretty good. I don't watch many standard movies anymore because of the picture and sound quality of high definition but when I do it is good. Firmware upgrades are easy and take about 20 minutes to completely download. Wish the display had a filter on it like the newer ones do, it is so bright it is a little distracting if you don't turn it down. Overall I give it a thumbs up. Thanks Toshiba for making future proof players.
did not last 6 months January 19, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought the hd- 20 toshiba hddvd player the 1st week of sept. 07, did not use it much at first because I did not have many hd dvd's, very expensive. about 3 weeks ago it started not sending a video signal to my t.v. about every 5th time I used it. I would have to unplug the unit and replug to get it to send a signal to my t.v. at this point I have sent it back to toshiba for repair, the freight is my expense to get it there. who knows how this will turn out.
Stay away! January 15, 2008 2 out of 18 found this review helpful
HD DVD is a dead format! Warner Brothers is going to stop producing HD DVD discs soon. Do a search and you will see many articles about this. The only studios that will be making HD DVD's are Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal. Disney, Buena Vista, Sony, Warner Brothers, New Line, MGM, and Lionsgate all release movies exclusively on Blu-ray.
Do yourself a favor and avoid HD DVD players. The reason the prices are so cheap is that Toshiba knows it is dead and is probably clearing out remaining inventory. You've been warned!
